Mariachi music started off as a male dominated sound. With the incorporation of women's voices the mariachi sound changed drastically. Presently Mariachi music is typical to not only wedding celebrations but also to the celebration of new born babies, deceased loved ones, and all kind of celebration events. Between 1980 and 1990 several workshops teaching Mariachi music have been held at the University of California in Los Angeles. In 2011 Mariachi music was added to the intangible cultural heritage list of the UNESCO. Recently in June 2013 the first Mariachi school in Mexico City was inaugurated. what is the origen of mariachi music?
Mariachi music is a music style typical of the Hispanic culture. This style of music was originated in Mexico in the 1530's when the Spaniards set up music schools with the purpose to praise the Virgen Mary. The instruments used were mostly string instruments such as the violin, the vihuela (Spanish Vihuela was created in the 16th century which had the shape of a guitar. It had six or seven courses of strings which were played with a bow, a quill or the fingers) and the harp. Over time the Mexican mestizos learned to play the European instruments in their own way. There were small groups of people performing on these instruments just to socialize. Later these groups became more popular as they started to play also during weddings. The name "Mariachi" comes from the French word " mariage" ( which means wedding) which was introduced by French soldiers in the 19th century. As the Mariachi music became more popular, other elements such as the trumpet, the "gritos" ( shouting) and the "charro" (horseman) outfit were introduced.

SD Opera presents first mariachi opera

SD Opera presents first mariachi opera | what is the origen of mariachi music? | Scoop.it

With a tradition dating back to the late 19th century, the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán is among the most respected ensembles in mariachi music. So it was only natural that the Houston Grand Opera turned to the ensemble’s legendary leader, Jose “Pepe” Martinez, to write the score and collaborate with librettist Leonard Foglia in creating the world’s first mariachi opera.

The result — “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” (“To Cross the Face of the Moon”) — was well received in Houston and Paris, is scheduled for a production in Chicago, and comes to San Diego on Saturday for two semi-staged performances presented by the San Diego Opera at the Civic Theatre.

The music will be performed by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán and Martinez onstage, with a bilingual cast headed by Brian Shircliffe as a family member caught between two worlds.

Martinez speaks little English, but he agreed to answer some questions in writing through a translator and was eloquent in his responses. Here are some translated and edited excerpts from our exchange.
