Sources and Tags: Dennis O'Connor's Curating Secrets | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

There's no question that Dennis O'Connor has found much success on Scoop.it. It wasn't all coincidental, though. Dennis shared with us two of his best curation secrets and tricks:

1. Develop multiple sources for your topics
It's important to carefully think through the keywords that you set for your topic so that Scoop.it can crawl the web and provide you with interesting and relevant content and inspiration. In addition to taking full advantage of this, Dennis also uses other tools like Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Prismatic to find content to share on Scoop.it. Once he finds the content he wants to share with his audience, he uses Scoop.it as his social media hub to add value to that content and share it everywhere.

2. Tag your posts
Dennis takes a lot of time to tag each of his posts. This allows him, he explained, to assemble publications based upon his tagged topics. When he's using his information on Scoop.it for his E-learning classes, it's easy for him to filter his Scoop.it pages based upon different subjects and easily compile a list of posts and articles on appropriate topics to provide to his students. Something interesting that Dennis does with his tagged articles is to pull them by subject and create "special editions" of his topics on his blog for special classes and events that he is teaching.

Content Curation your secret weapon - Drive Traffic & Find New Customers

Content Curation your secret weapon - Drive Traffic & Find New Customers | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it
Using Content Curation To Find New Customers.

Being an Internet marketer for many years I’ve seen the landscape change many times but one thing has stayed the same “Content is King”, when it comes to driving traffic to a website.

As a business owner we all want to get new customers to our websites. Many have tried blogging to drive traffic to their website and due to a shortage of hours in a day they end up dropping the blog or hiring ghost writers to develop content for the site. We now have a new player on the net and it comes in the form of Content Curation. No it will not completely eliminate business owners creating content for their website but adds a whole new area of content development for a website.

Over the past two years I’ve tested different content curation sites and tools and have found Scoop.it to be the leader in both innovation and traffic building potential.

Below are examples on how Scoop.it can drive traffic and help to show the world, yes the world that your business knows your market.

In this article are 3 areas that when done correctly can drive new traffic to your business or brand.

Beijing street to be duty-free haven

Beijing street to be duty-free haven | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

Beijing is considering making a city neighborhood often called "Russia Town" its first downtown duty-free shopping area, following the announcement last week of a 72-hour visa exemption policy for foreign tourists from Jan 1.

The city authorities have revealed plans are afoot to turn Yabao Road - a retail hub that attracts many foreign traders, especially Russians - into a pilot area for outlets offering tax refunds and duty-free shopping.

The city authority signed a strategic cooperation letter with China Duty Free Group in May during the China Beijing International Fair for Trade in Services, which mapped out joint plans to set up duty-free shops in the capital's CBD area.

Libraries Struggle to Close the 'Digital Divide' - Room for Debate | NYTimes.com

Libraries Struggle to Close the 'Digital Divide' - Room for Debate | NYTimes.com | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

For a growing number of Americans, a library is for Internet access. According to a Pew survey last month, more than a quarter of all adults used the Internet at a library during the past year. The numbers are higher for blacks and Latinos than they are for whites. Indeed, whites may not know or understand how important library Internet access is to minorities: 92 percent of blacks and 86 percent of Latinos said it was very important for libraries to offer free access to computers and the Internet, while only 72 percent of whites did.

Users of public library Internet connections tell surveyors that they're applying for jobs, doing homework, getting information about health care, finding out about government benefits and managing their finances. And because almost a third of Americans (again, more blacks and Latinos than whites) don't subscribe to our country's expensive Internet access at home, librarians say that they're scrambling to fill the gap left by our nation's yawning digital divide.

Shanghai City to be 2nd Chinese Duty-Free region

Shanghai is to become the second region on the mainland to allow duty-free shopping for individuals traveling domestically, part of the city's efforts to become an international trade center, according to a guideline that takes effect on January 1.

Shanghai currently has duty-free shops at airports and one in Jing'an District that allows individuals to buy duty-free products within 6 months of their last return from overseas.
The proposed new duty-free shops will extend tax benefits to travelers without the need to leave the country.

The Future of Shopping

The Future of Shopping | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

The idea is that nicer-looking stores and better service will help combat “showrooming”—the act of visiting a store to look at a videogame console or fancy television before you buy it, cheaper, on the Internet. The trend has been gathering steam for years, but over the past 18 months, smartphone apps like RedLaser and Amazon’s Price Check have made it as easy as, er, stealing display space from a big box: just scan the item’s bar code and the app shows you whether you can get it cheaper somewhere else.

New Digital Trends, The Age Of Mobile, Human Curation: The Decline Of Google News

New Digital Trends, The Age Of Mobile, Human Curation: The Decline Of Google News | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

Here are some excerpts from this interesting article published on PandoDaily:

"Some publishers – namely AP, AFP, and Rupert Murdoch – have long taken umbrage with Google, whom they have accused of leeching off of newspapers’ content. Cantankerous Murdoch has called Google “content kleptomaniacs.”

Now, politicians and newspapers in Europe and South America are engaging in fresh revolts.

Their reasoning: When Google News offers a headline and part of the first paragraph of a story, users are less inclined to click through to read the actual article.

...

One possibility is that Google News is in decline because of converging digital trends that are lessening its influence. The Web’s big shift to mobile coupled with the explosion of social sharing, the increasing importance of human-powered curation, and tougher competition may be making the now old-school aggregator less potent.

There are a lot of strong forces at play in the ever-tumultuous news industry that could compromise Google News’ dominance. First, we now live in the Age of Mobile, and it’s not clear how well Google News performs on smartphones. From its iOS search app, the “News” tab does sneak into the homescreen, in the form of a button in the bottom-right-hand corner, but it is not especially prominent.

...

Another challenge for Google News has been the emerging mania for curation. Spotify founder Daniel Ek said that the next step in the music company’s evolution will be helping people “make sense” of the abundant content.

He flagged the Pinterest-led curation wave as an important phenomenon. Pinterest proves that a mix of algorithms and human judgement can provide a superior content consumption experience.

Indeed, there’s evidence to suggest that many Web users are becoming more curatorial in their consumption habits, a point supported not only by Pinterest’s rise, but also by the growing prevalence of services such as Foursquare’s “Explore” feature, Twitter’s “Discover” section, Reddit, HotelTonight, Longform, Longreads.

...

As mobile and apps accelerate the proliferation and accessibility of content, it’s likely that we’re going to rely more heavily on filters to navigate this era of abundance.

Finally, these days Google News just faces much more competition than ever before, from startups, apps, websites, and even traditional publishers, who have become more digitally savvy. Now that we’re in an era in which reading on smartphones and tablets is a norm, apps such as Flipboard, Pulse, Feedly, Prismatic, Zite, Flud, and Sumly, just to name a few, are all vying for attention, providing news reading experiences that are not only competitive with Google News but also better looking.

...

This means that readers have more, and sometimes better, options for discovering and reading news, and publishers have other viable traffic-generating options. Perhaps that is why publishers in Europe and Brazil are acting now to slay the search beast. They sense a vulnerability that Google News didn’t have even a year ago..."

January News from Boston Cyberarts! | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

The Boston Cyberarts Gallery is pleased to present City of Work, by Michael Lewy. This dystopian view of a city filled with cubicles reflects the ideas of the author of The Overworked American, Juliet Schor, who wrote that in 1990, Americans worked an average of nearly one month more per year than in 1970. Using photography, video, computer graphics and the Internet, Lewy has constructed an entire society where vacations are given by lottery, jobs are determined by the Human Potential Institute and it is illegal to be unemployed.

Marcus Sterling L'amour, founder and CEO of Omnipresent Industries says about the exhibition, "While we at Omnipresent Industries disapprove of art, as it represents a loss of those precious hours we have available to make ourselves better workers, this exhibition does reflect the strong values that Omnipresent Industries stands for, our core principles that guide our decisions and actions, ensuring everything we do is beneficial to our way of life. Remember our motto "if you worked here, you would be at work right now.""

This is How Luxury Brands Do Awesome Social Media Marketing in China in 2012 | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

China’s online market is vast and growing at an insane rate – Chinese e-commerce sales are projected to triple from now to 2015 – which makes it a draw for all luxury brands. But it’s also so very different from western markets that it demands a whole new approach. That’s where the annual Digital IQ Index comes in, a detailed report by the L2 Think Tank that grades brands on their carefully crafted approach to social marketing and web presences for Chinese consumers.

Last year this Digital IQ report ranked three global companies as having “genius”-level marketing chops: Audi, Burberry, and BMW. This time around, four luxury brands get this accolade, led by cosmetics firm Estée Lauder.

U.S. GDP on the road to zero growth by 2050?

U.S. GDP on the road to zero growth by 2050? | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

by PAUL B. FARRELL (MarketWatch)

Near zero economic growth by 2050? Yes, America’s economy is collapsing. Fast. Yes, the “most depressing forecast ever,” says InvestmentNews, trusted source for 90,000 professional financial advisers across America.

Actually it’s worse than depressing if you read the details in “On Road to Zero Growth,” the latest Quarterly Letter from Jeremy Grantham, founder and chief investment strategist for the $100 billion GMO money managers.

Yes, today’s fiscal-cliff drama is just a warm-up for what’s coming. America’s economic future is a disaster. We are going over a bigger game-changing economic cliff, into a long-term chasm. And it’s unavoidable.

Why? Because our myopic Congressional leaders and Fed chairman are focused on short-term fixes, piling on more monetary-stimulus debt, while avoiding America’s systemic long-term problems. Yes, we are our own worst enemy and nothing will keep us from driving down the road to zero growth and into painful austerity, just like the 1930s. [MORE]

How to Convert Blog Readers Into Customers

How to Convert Blog Readers Into Customers | What is Marketing Today ? | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article by Neil Patel posted on Quick Sprout:

"Creating a popular blog isn’t hard. The hardest part about blogging is generating a positive ROI from it. Here is the formula I use to monetize my blogs:

- Webinars:

If you have a product or service, you should consider doing a weekly webinar. The webinar shouldn’t just be about your product or service, but instead it should be around something that benefits your potential customers.

By giving them useful information for about marketing, it builds trust within our brand and that drives signups.

Here are the two ways we do it:

1) Ask them to signup...

2) Offer a free trial...

- Remarketing:

It’s much easier to drive traffic to your blog compared to your main site. The reason being is content marketing can drive millions of visitors through the use of infographics, content guides, and plain old blog posts.

Once you have a large audience reading your blog, you want to remarket them. Through services like Retargeter and Perfect Audience you can pixel all of your blog readers.

- Call to actions:

There are 4 effective call to actions that you can easily use:

1) Hellobar...

2) Navigation link...

3) Static ad...

4) Scrolling ad...

- Case Studies:

If you are targeting businesses as your primary customer type, case studies are another great way to drive customers to your business.

- Special promotions:

One of the easiest ways to convert readers into customers is to offer them special promotions. From doing a blog post that offers readers a special discount, or a bundled deal like Appsumo tends to offer, you can get really creative in driving signups.

- Collect emails:

It’s a much longer process than the above methods, but the conversion rates tend to be higher.

Now lets start with a the ways you can collect emails on your blog:

1) Popup...
2) Sidebar...
3) Blog posts...

Once you have the emails you want to create an email drip system. Typically the email drip consists of at least 7 emails and it is sent to people automatically over time. With services like MailChimp, Aweber, or SendGrid you can easily create a drip. Within those emails you need to educate your customer base and sell them over time..."
