Young Welders to Compete in Worldskills Competition

Three young welders will compete in the February SkillsUSA WorldTeam Weld Finals after advancing from the AWS/SkillsUSA US Invitational Weld Trials held in November at FABTECH 2012. The winner of the February competition will then be the final team member to be selected to represent the US in the WorldSkills Competition, held this year in Germany.

New Ship Building Technology to Clean Up Exhuast

The biggest marine scrubber installation in the world is about to take place in March for the Norwegian Cruise liner, Pride of America. Exhaust gas scrubbers are used in ships and diesel power plants to remove sulfur from exhaust. Sulfur oxides cannot be reduced by changing the combustion process within an engine, so a common solution has been to use fuel with a lower sulfur content.

Schools are tending to focus on college prep subjects at the expense of skills training programs. Policymakers Fight to Change Perspectives on Skilled Trades

Angelina Dadswell's insight:

In a Senate hearing on the economy and the state of skilled trade jobs, Mike Rowe (host of Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel) pointed out that even while there is a high rate of unemployment in the US, there is also a worker shortage in the skilled labor industry. Rowe goes on to say that this bizarre situation is caused by the negative image people typically have of tradesmen and physical labor. Industry leaders and workers in the field have been well aware of the petering number of capable workers.
