Fiddling whilst carbon burns

Will the disaster that has crippled the Phillipines be a wake up call to the self satisfied governments of industrialised countries?  New York's superstorm Sandy set the scene.  Now Haiyan has gives an insight into huge potential impacts of the climatic time bomb that is ticking relentlessly whilst carbon burns.

Gordon McGlone's curator insight, October 29, 2013 11:12 AM

||Strictly speaking, this is not a children's science book. However, it conveys several important messages: first, the value of listening to what the environment is telling us and the inherent value to be found in protecting the natural world. In view of global warming and increasing pressures upon natural spaces from snowballing human populations, this message is more important than ever. Second, this myth is a story of profound optimism in the face of adversity, chronicling "progress from a lower world to a higher one" where "there is light, and the possibility for greater and more abundant life." (p. 38.)||

||A day after Typhoon Haiyan churned through the Philippine archipelago in a straight line from east to west, rescue teams struggled to reach far-flung regions, hampered by washed out roads, many choked with debris and fallen trees.

The death toll is expected to rise sharply from the fast-moving storm, whose circumference eclipsed the whole country and which late on Saturday was heading for Vietnam.||

'A Simplistic box-ticking exercise' is not a great endorsement of a ministerial policy - but it is an accurate put-down of the government's development led biodiversity offestting proposals.  We need to value nature not put it up for grabs in an environmental poundland.

||Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) chairwoman Joan Walley MP said many witnesses that gave evidence to the EAC's inquiry had voiced concerns that key habitats - such as ancient woodlands and Sites of Special Scientific Interest - would be included in the government's offsetting plans.||

Farming with wildlife is lagging behind the good intentions of the 1980s when FWAGs blossomed.  Farmland birds are doing poorly and the NFU has pressed for a CAP review that is less green than it should be.

Gordon McGlone's curator insight, January 6, 2014 12:07 PM

HS2 brings the deabate about the value of nature right onto our TV News screens.  I expect this woeful tale to run and run.

||Click here to download The Wildlife Trusts full position statement on HS2.

The Wildlife Trusts are convinced that:

  • The principles of sustainable development - including the need for efficient and sustainable transport systems and the need to move to a low carbon economy - must not be achieved at the expense of the natural environment.
  • The former Government’s policy document on High Speed Rail (March 2010) significantly underestimated the impact of the proposed route on the natural environment.
  • The current approach to assessing the least environmentally-damaging route is seriously flawed, and that the environmental case for the current proposals lacks clarity.
  • The Appraisal of Sustainability seriously underestimates the environmental mitigation and compensation costs and opportunities
  • Before pursuing either the currently proposed route, or any other high speed rail routes, the Government needs to complete a much fuller and more in-depth analysis of the environmental impact of a new rail link.||

Low morale and a fast exit from the benighted DEFRA is hardly surprising when intelligent committed staff have to implement daft and failing policies like the badger cull pilot fiasco.

||The committee also invited the government “to set out why the first year of [badger cull] pilots failed to achieve the target figure in the allotted time and what changes are required in order for the planned future culls to be effective”.

Melting Arctic sea ice could increase summer rainfall in northwest Europe suggests new study - University of Exeter

Melting Arctic sea ice could increase summer rainfall in northwest Europe suggests new study - University of Exeter | wedding and event | Scoop.it

A new study offers an explanation for the extraordinary run of wet summers experienced by Britain and northwest Europe between 2007 and 2012. The study found that loss of Arctic sea ice shifts the jet stream further south than normal resulting in increased rain during the summer in northwest Europe.

||Dr Screen said: “The results of the computer model suggest that melting Arctic sea ice causes a change in the position of the jet stream and this could help to explain the recent wet summers we have seen.

“The study suggests that loss of sea ice not only has an effect on the environment and wildlife of the Arctic region but has far reaching consequences for people living in Europe and beyond.”||

“The 24 additional ancient woodlands referred to in this Report are not recognised as such by Natural England. Who decides if a wood is ancient?

||“The 24 additional ancient woodlands referred to in this Report are not recognised as such by Natural England. Moreover, we will be planting over two million new trees resulting in there being more woodland when HS2 is completed than there is now. HS2 is not being built at the expense of the environment.||

Woodland Trust thinks differently -

||So far our analysis shows that the route will directly affect 33 ancient woods. And depending on the final route, track specifications (the width of which varies between 25m and 60m) and location of stations there could be an additional negative impact on further ancient woods.!!
