Over the weekend, news broke of a nasty new piece of malware targeting Mac users. It's "ransomware" that encrypts users' data, making it impossible to access unless they pay a bounty to the malware's operator.

Malware is a persistent problem on Windows machines — it has even shut down hospital networks — but this is the first time ransomware has made its way onto OS X.

In my particular opinion, few other experiences can get my blood pumping like a sneak peek into an epic upcoming. A theatrical trailer’s editing, music selection, and general audio post-production are designed to do just that, and Daniel Lepervanche is in the midst of it all.

A project coming out of the M.I.T. Media Lab on Monday seeks to ease that challenge and to make the value of government data available to a wider audience. The project, called Data USA, bills itself as “the most comprehensive visualization of U.S. public data.” It is free, and its software code is open source, meaning that developers can build custom applications by adding other data.
