Learn about the "G'SOT" and why social media when used in marketing is nothing more than a tactic.

 

There’s an old adage about the weather that’s gospel for mountaineers and meteorologists alike: There’s no such thing as good or bad weather. All we have is weather, and you have to be prepared for it — good and bad.

 

Same goes for media and marketing. There’s no such thing as traditional or new media, just as there’s no such thing as traditional or social media marketing. All there is media and marketing, and both have always been and always will be in a constant state of tactical evolvement.

 

In fact, when people talk or write about “social media marketing” being a discipline unto itself – one requiring a unique skills set and understanding to master – all they’re really talking about is the last item in what I like to call the G’SOT. And unless you understand the difference between Goals, Strategies, Objectives and Tactics (the G’SOT), you’re likely to dismiss anything else there is to say on the subject.

 

So, for the uninitiated...

Social media is not delivering the desired result for the majority of enterprises worldwide, according to a global trend report published by Tata Consultancy Services. Very few (10 percent) enterprises have actually benefited from investments in social media.

 

Consumers do use social media to interact with companies but findings of the report indicate that only 27 percent of research and development/product development and 37 percent of product management departments read social media comments from consumers on a regular basis. Eighty-one percent of those who are benefiting from social media go beyond just having company pages on social networks and have corporate blogs....

Keeping up with the social universe is challenging but necessary if you want to operate your marketing at unfathomable speeds.

 

Social marketing now drives a faster everything. In fact, social forces marketers to go faster, not the other way around. It’s for this exact reason that businesses are afraid to become a social business.

 

Take Uber for example. Their vision was simple in creating a service that put the power of seamless ‘right now’ transportation into the palm of our hands. How about Apple? Steve Wozniak talked about how they originally set out with a simple vision to build a personal computer. They built the first personal computer that delivered a word processor.

 

It turned out that the computer called for networking, which quickly grew into the need for the internet. We needed a way to see the new clusters of information created on the internet, so search engines were born. And now, social commerce is enabled. Steve says “we did not build a computer knowing all this was going to happen, we started with a simple vision.”...
