Moodle Monday – Gradebook Calculation Formulas –

Moodle Monday – Gradebook Calculation Formulas – | Web 3.0 | Scoop.it

Today’s Moodle Monday will be focusing on how you can create a formula in Moodle to calculate a weighted mean of grades.

As it stands, Moodle automatically assigns a simple weighted mean of grades to every assignment that is added in a Moodle course. (For example: if a module has 2 assignments, each activity will be weighted 50%)

However, if your assignments are not weighted equally (or you have included activities such as quizzes, workshops etc.), it is possible to create a formula in Moodle to calculate a weighted mean of grades. These final course grades can then be made visible to students.

To create formulas (or set grade calculations) in Moodle, follow the pattern of formulas/functions you find in other spreadsheet programmes such as Excel. They all start with an (=) sign and use common mathematical operators and functions.

Easily create a Venn diagram drag and drop activity in Moodle

Easily create a Venn diagram drag and drop activity in Moodle | Web 3.0 | Scoop.it
There is an excellent plugin for the Moodle VLE called ‘Drag and Drop Markers‘ which allows someone to create quiz questions, where the learners have to drag and drop markers onto an uploaded image. This can be used to name parts of an image (e.g. bones in the skeleton, or geological features of a glacier), or to create effective categorisation questions. One of my favourite question types, is where the learners take pieces of information, and categorise these by placing them in the correct position on a Venn diagram.

To create this from scratch, would be extremely time consuming, so to make my life easier, I have used PowerPoint to create templates for myself, meaning that I can now create these questions in a matter of minutes, rather than hours, and I will release these to the wider community over the coming days and weeks (as I get time to tidy them up etc.) The first such template for release, is for a 3 circle Venn diagram categorisation activity.

Moodle Surpasses 100 Million Users Worldwide: Higher Ed, Corporate Lessons Learned

Moodle Surpasses 100 Million Users Worldwide: Higher Ed, Corporate Lessons Learned | Web 3.0 | Scoop.it
Brian Carlson, CEO of Moodle Partner eThink Education, reports in Learning Solutions Magazine that last February Moodle surpassed the 100 million user mark worldwide. Over a hundred thousand installations serving K-12, higher, and corporate education around the world make this Open Source LMS the number one in the world. Arguably, no other learning initiative has had such an impact in history.

Carlson, an industry veteran with experiences at the core of the LMS business, as well as its intersection with related services, attests to the expansion of the market, which before Moodle was all but sentenced to monopolistic practices that gouged prices and stifled innovation. There were other initiatives to provide accessible LMS to schools, but only Moodle caused a cultural shift. For many organizations, especially the smaller and less well-off, Moodle was their introduction to educational technologies (EdTech).

The road ever since has been steady, though not without momentous episodes. Carlson tells the story in two threads. First is the Higher Ed market, with which both he and Moodle itself are more acquainted. Moodle’s main drawback as an Open solution, its lack of support, did not have as much of an impact across campuses, as they were already collective knowledge creators and organizers. “Homebrew” technology clubs, not unlike the one where a young Wozniak and Jobs would meet, deserve some credit in the widespread adoption of Moodle.

The corporate thread describes a more hermetic landscape. Same as with other Open Source technologies, the business world took a while to overcome the skepticism behind a free LMS. Initial attempts to implement Moodle resulted in confusion and complexity. When all seemed lost, a stroke of genius brought some likely saviors: the Moodle Partners. They were critical to establishing Moodle’s dominant role in the enterprise and remain so today. Moodle Partners serve as a high-quality layer of support, making for a comfortable business case and ensuring the technology stays cutting edge.

The decade and a half of winning, however, does not exempt Moodle from some words of caution from Carlson about the future. Competition is fiercer than ever. In recent years, marketing strategies by commercial counterparts keep securing larger shares of new business, arguably Moodle’s Achilles heel. The strength of some of the Moodle Partners is also hard to translate across regions, particularly as compared to efforts by multinational EdTech companies with deep pockets.

But there is one thing the competition will find it hard to match: Moodle is free and Open, with new developments every other month. The fact that teams of developers anywhere can offer Moodle services worldwide creates real incentives for innovation at the heart of the platform. While commercial companies, offering closed-environment solutions, can keep customers captive, companies who are customers of Moodle services know they can take their business elsewhere, keeping their sites intact, if they want the cool new toys. Early adopters of EdTech have no other way to go.

The near future of Learning Automation: The Smart LMS

The near future of Learning Automation: The Smart LMS | Web 3.0 | Scoop.it
With learning automation, the LMS is programmed to “learn” the skills that each individual employee needs to meet business goals. Algorithms tell the LMS computer code how to determine which skills are required, based on business objectives. The LMS then produces a customized learning plan for each employee based on gaps indicated by skill assessment results. No more writing assessments; you simply upload your existing content and the system writes the questions. As business goals change, the LMS, guided by the underlying algorithms, adjusts immediately and changes learning plans as needed to fill the newly identified skill gaps.

This new type of LMS has only become possible with the advent of machine learning. The algorithm provides detailed instructions that enables the LMS to discover the needs of the business and each individual in your organization. No matter how much things change, the system will continue to adjust learning plans automatically, responding to updating company objectives. Instead of trying to plan for every possibility, the “machine”—in this case, the LMS—“learns” what is needed by analyzing the data according to the instructions contained in the algorithm.

Get Started With R/Exams And Dynamic Data Science Teaching In Moodle

Get Started With R/Exams And Dynamic Data Science Teaching In Moodle | Web 3.0 | Scoop.it
R/Exams is an extension of the popular, open source, scientific bundle, R, which in the past decade has experienced a significant adoption growth courtesy of increasing interest in data science. Today, R shares (with programming language Python) top-ranking status as a tool to aid in the processes of data cleanup, analysis, and visualization.

R/Exams has existed for more than a decade, but only recently did the team realize the present-day potential of R/Exams to help introduce more students to the tool and the data science field at large. The authors also credit Moodle and other LMS with making it easier to leverage R/Exams into data science and R training programs.

The best way to get started with R/Exams is on the official blog. It features real case studies, which double as tutorials on the software’s innovative features. R/Exams lets instructors program printable questions, where everything on the page (from content to layout) is editable through R code. This makes is simple to automate the creation of math test, for example, with equally structured questions but with different quantities for each student to neutralize cheating. For an LMS, a post documents a similar take on dynamic questions for multiple- and single-choice types, developed at the University of Innsbruck, where answers and accompanying graphical aid are procedurally generated.
