Challenging the Model of 1:1 with BYOD

Challenging the Model of 1:1 with BYOD | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it

Our aim for using mixed devices was to challenge teachers and students to really integrate technology into their instruction and learning. By having multiple devices available, users are challenged to determine which device best suits their learning purpose, and teachers are also challenged to rethink how they are using technology.

Word Booster

Susan's insight:
Take any English article, paste the link in the Word Booster tool search, and watch the magic! It creates vocabulary lists, exercises and QR code to the article too! It's hard to find digital tools that can offer something new... I haven't been here for awhile for that reason but this one is worth mentioning!

Three Tools to Help You Teach English Pronunciation (and How to Do This Asynchronously) | Teaching ESL Online | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it
I often get emails from teachers worried that online tools and resources are going to replace them. My opinion is that this won’t happen anytime soon. Additionally, we shouldn’t see these resources as competition but, instead, as potentially useful tools to help us better help our learners. And in this post, I want to look at …

Seven Web-based Tools for Delivering Flipped Lessons | Free Technology for Teachers | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it

This fall there will be teachers trying the flipped classroom approach to lessons for the first time. In the right setting the flipped classroom model can work well. My favorite tools for creating flipped lessons include the option to insert questions for students to answer while watching the video instead of waiting until the end to answer a series of questions.

The Future of Learning - Learning {Re}imagined - Medium
What is the purpose of school & the role of EdTech?

Via L. García Aretio
Susan's insight:
Enjoyed reading this and we all need to reflect.  Why do we send our children to school? What do we really want them to learn? What role should technology have? Can technology work without the teacher? Of course not! We need to integrate technology and get both teachers and students engaged and motivated to learn once again.  We need a new way of teaching and learning.  And yes, if used wisely, technology can be of great use!

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it
While AR isn’t difficult or expensive to use (especially when compared to 3D Printing or Maker Spaces), it does require forethought and planning. You’ll need a smartphone or tablet with a back facing camera, an augmented reality app (many free), a trigger image (you create yourself, probably for free), and an Internet connection. Then, scan the trigger image with a mobile device app and see what happens!

Via Nik Peachey, Fiona Price
Susan's insight:
Although AR isn't one of my favorite uses of technology in the classroom, I do think that it can be educational if used on occasion or as a one-off activity. Kids will certainly be amazed at what they see and you can build on that initial engagement to create real authentic tasks.

Send Anywhere

Send Anywhere | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it
The easiest way to share files across all of your devices. Send files of any size and type, as many times as you want, all for free!
Susan's insight:
So far Send Anywhere has been the easiest program to use when transferring files between various devices. The only problem I see so far is that you have to make sure the receiver has the app installed as well.  They will give you a link if you want to send it via email but it's not as quick as sending it device to device with a 6-digit code they give you.  In my opinion it's great between friends and people who are 'present' at the moment you have to send a file quickly as the 6-digit code expires after 10 min.
