NWS Springfield, MO - This Day in Weather History

- In 1987...Major severe weather outbreak in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana produces 49 tornadoes killing 12 and injuring 292. An F3 tornado tracked 49.5 miles through eastern Texas into Louisiana and kills 34,000 chickens. Winds gusted to 102 mph in Galveston, Texas.

- In 1988...A destructive tornado developed near Billings and moved northeast to just southeast of Republic. It then went aloft and touched down again just southwest of Springfield near Hwy FF and Battlefield road and moved northeast to Fellows Lake. Extensive damage was reported along the tornadoes path but no injuries or deaths were reported.

- In 1988...An F2 tornado hits Topeka, KS injuring 22 people. At least two F2 tornadoes move through central Arkansas and killing 6. Power is knocked out over a wide area. One tornado struck the gym of a high school in Van Buren County AR. Luckily, the basketball team was playing an away game, or 400 fans would have been in serious danger from the F3 tornado.
