4 Self-Improvement Myths That May Be Holding You Back

4 Self-Improvement Myths That May Be Holding You Back | wealth business & social media | Scoop.it

Advice on how to improve one’s self is everywhere.  It accounts for about 2.5% of all book sales in the United States. Add in speeches, training programs, TV programs, online-products, coaches, yoga, and the like, self-help is a $10 billion industry per year, and that’s just in the U.S.

However, research shows that much of the advice extolled may be misleading or even wrong. Several myths about performance persist, despite research and practices that show they are half-truths at best. That might explain why the most likely purchasers of self-improvement books have bought another within the previous 18 months.  The first myth-riddled book didn’t work, so they bought another, and maybe another soon after.

A recent report in the Journal of Management noted that of nearly 25,000 academic articles on performance, only a fraction include what psychologists call within person variance, which describes ranges, such as that between individuals’ top, average and worst performances. Advice too often mistakenly assumes performance can be compared across people, using the same gauge. That’s absurd.

Our observation of hundreds of performance seekers largely confirms the report and has led to delineating a series of myths that hold people back when trying to improve. These assertions are based on a diverse set of fields, including psychology, sports, arts, and leadership. We hope that by dispelling these myths, explaining the reality and offering some sound advice instead, we can help move people toward more effective personal development.

The Current State of Voiceover: Two Approaches Radio/Broadcast and Acting | Huffington Post

The Current State of Voiceover: Two Approaches Radio/Broadcast and Acting | Huffington Post | wealth business & social media | Scoop.it
We think veteran casting director, producer, and author, Kate McClanaghan, offers some interesting insights in this article. While we don't disagree with her primary contention that there are two differing paths people seem to take with regards to embarking on a voiceover career—"the broadcast/radio approach and the acting approach"—we think that she really gets to the heart of it with her on-target observation: "I’ve worked with relatively inexperienced talent who were infinitely more professional than some of those I’ve had in the booth with 20 or more years of “mic experience.” It’s all relative. You’re either a professional or you’re not."

We absolutely agree with this and will go so far as to state that taking a professional approach is most important; more than "natural talent." Anyone can plug a mic into his or her computer and call him- or herself a "voice actor" or "voice artist," but what really distinguishes voice actors from one another is their degree of professionalism and how seriously they take their craft. Those who study, develop a critical ear, seek out professional training, commit to developing and honing their skills, and are willing to do the work—even the parts that aren't necessarily fun or immediately lucrative—are the ones who have the greatest chance of succeeding in this business and building sustainable careers.

49 of the Best Snapchat Drawings We've Ever Seen  | wealth business & social media | Scoop.it

An Easy Guide to Beer: History, Styles, Terms

An Easy Guide to Beer: History, Styles, Terms | wealth business & social media | Scoop.it
Ale yeast gathers and ferments at the top (hence, "top fermented") of the vessel, at a high temperature so the yeast acts quickly. Some finish fermenting in less than 2 weeks. Ales are sophisticated and rich, with increased yeast-derived flavors.

Whether American or English, the "light" was cut on long ago to distinguish it from the dark colour of Porters. English and American styles differ, but generally they can be copper colored and dry with clear hop flavor or gold.

Pale ale with slightly higher alcohol content and odor and intense hop flavor.

These distinctively northern English style ales might be sweet, nutty and incredibly lightly hopped and have a powerful, malty centre. They're medium bodied and the name fits the colour of the ale.

Stout (Guinness and Murphy's are dry Irish stouts) - Heavy, black rich and opaque. Stouts draw on colour and their flavor from roasted barley. They frequently taste of caramel and malt , with little to no hop aroma or flavor.

Porter - Virtually identical to stout but made from, or largely from, unroasted barley. Dark and sweet brown in color with touches of chocolate as well as a sometimes -sharp bitterness.

Wheat Beer - Germans take their beer very seriously that law requires it to make use of top-fermenting yeast. It should be made from at least 50% wheat malt. Wheat proteins contribute to some misty, or nebulous look and so are usually unfiltered, leaving yeast sediment in the bottle. They're light colored, full flavored as well as the exceptional yeast strains generate flavors like banana, clove and vanilla.

Hefeweizen - The most commercially successful form of wheat beer. In the US they're consistently served using a lemon wedge to cut the intense yeast flavor.

Brands that listen to their customers and form a natural dialogue will be the most successful in an agile world.

Just as the Gen X and baby-boom generations have had their own unique relationship to brands, this dynamic will continue to evolve over time.

Having worked to connect brands with their audiences across many different generations, I've seen the importance of understanding how each unique demographic envisions the ideal brand-consumer relationship. Each generation has approached this connection in a slightly different way, and successful brands are the ones that understand the shifting dynamics and how to maintain their relevance.

This article will take a look at a few aspects of branding as it relates to the generations which will shape our economy and society over the decades to come.

Leverage Twitter as part of your medical marketing

Leverage Twitter as part of your medical marketing | wealth business & social media | Scoop.it

To reach their audiences, marketers utilize a variety of different communication methods. This is vital, as physicians and other medical professionals are increasingly focusing on social media channels like Twitter to interact with their patients. This tool can be impactful for both parties, especially if it’s used in an efficient and effective manner.

Twitter can be very impactful if used correctly.

Utilize time-sensitive information
There’s a plethora of interesting data floating around the Twitterverse these days. Physicians who are members of TwitterDoctors.net provide helpful links and commentary on health and medical issues. While commenting on these stories is important for growing an engaged audience, marketers can take their interactions a step further.

For instance, life sciences organizations can share highlights of medical surveys, product reviews and best practices with their followers, offering healthcare providers valuable information. With the constantly updating nature of Twitter, physicians have the ability to get out ahead of medical information and better keep their patients informed. Providing this kind of relevance to medical professionals is an excellent way to attract them to your marketing materials.

“Video can hold an audience’s attention better than a long-form article may be able to.”

Use video when possible
Humans have an increasingly short attention span. This isn’t being helped by the fact that people often rely on social media – which is always being updated – to find information. In fact, a study conducted by Microsoft found humans have a shorter attention span than goldfish.

To work through this, medical marketers should maximize use of video in their Tweets as often as possible if the content is relevant and interesting, according to Medical Marketing & Media. It’s all about knowing one’s audience, and with the busy lives medical professionals lead, a short video can be much more digestible than a long-form article.

Don’t forget to network
Social media sites are a strong way for organizations to get the word out about their products and services. By utilizing platforms like Twitter, marketers can broaden their audience past the normal amount of medical professionals they interact with. If doctors, physicians and nurses find the information these parties share on the site helpful, they may refer their peers to the organization as well. As a result, life sciences companies could see an increase in exposure in their industry and a larger number of medical professionals wanting to work with them. Social media is a great opportunity for organizations to network with people and practices in their field.

Medical marketing can be an impactful way to interact with people if it’s carried out efficiently and professionally. As more healthcare providers enter the social media field, it’s critical for these efforts to be meaningful for the best results.

Ex-Google engineers have spent 2 years secretly trying to solve 'the hardest problem in banking' | wealth business & social media | Scoop.it

A startup led by two former Google engineers on Wednesday unveiled a cloud-based "operating system" for banks meant to bring the infrastructure at the heart of finance into the 21st century.

London-based Thought Machine has been working on its VaultOS platform behind closed doors for two years, with over 50 engineers dedicated to the project.

The project is one of the first bottom-up attempts to built a modern computer system for banks, which can be used out of the box by any bank and then tailored as necessary. The platform draws on the latest technology such as cloud infrastructure and blockchain.

Managing your time is a challenge for all of us, but entrepreneurs face it more often than most.  The desire to succeed, seeing the link between your time and effort and that success often makes the decision difficult. But making time is essential - and using time buckets can help you understand how you are utilizing it and more importantly, how you can manage it better.

Time just slips away from many business owners, resulting in them having to spend far more time than necessary, working in their businesses to achieve the outcomes they want. Often this is done at high personal cost and this does not need to be the case. To be more effective in business and in life, business owners need to be smarter, in respect to where they allocate their time. Great articles such as this one, offer excellent guidance on how to achieve this objective.
