Gaza running out of drinkable water

Gaza running out of drinkable water | Water Resource | Scoop.it

The7-year-old blockade on the Gaza Strip has had devastating impacts on most of life’s aspects for people in Gaza. Since Israel began the blockade on the Gaza strip in 2007, most of the materials needed for the infrastructure are banned from entering. As a result, there is little  visible and concrete process in people’s daily lives in Gaza. One of the extremely serious problems facing Palestinian in Gaza is drinkable water. The population of Gaza is growingrapidly, by 2020, the population of Palestinians living in Gaza is expected to reach 2 million, who will be living in avery densely populated environment.  The UN has declared the main source of fresh water and the underground coastal aquifer will be unusable by 2016 for the young nation of Gaza.

Groundwater is a resource found in the U.S. that is necessary to supply water for the United States. Groundwater depletion has become a common problem with groundwater use. Excessive pumping can lead to cause problems for obtaining water later. Groundwater depletion in the U.S. is found in the Southwest and High Plains for many years.

Demand for water outstrips supply

Demand for water outstrips supply | Water Resource | Scoop.it
Groundwater use is unsustainable in many of the world's major agricultural zones.

Almost one-quarter of the world’s population lives in regions where groundwater is being used up faster than it can be replenished, concludes a comprehensive global analysis of groundwater depletion, published this week in Nature.

Across the world, human civilizations depend largely on tapping vast reservoirs of water that have been stored for up to thousands of years in sand, clay and rock deep underground. These massive aquifers — which in some cases stretch across multiple states and country borders — provide water for drinking and crop irrigation, as well as to support ecosystems such as forests and fisheries.

Yet in most of the world’s major agricultural regions, including the Central Valley in California, the Nile delta region of Egypt, and the Upper Ganges in India and Pakistan, demand exceeds these reservoirs' capacity for renewal.

If you eat corn or wheat in the United States, there's a good chance it was grown with the help of paleowater left over from the last ice age when glaciers covered the Great Plains. And as neat and healthy as that sounds -- paleowater! -- this is not good news.
The Ogallal Aquifer is one of the largest aquifers in the world, running beneath parts of eight states in the central US. And it is this giant, ancient aquifer that is being sucked dry faster than rain can keep up. Put another way, we've nearly used up a million-year-old source of water in the 100 or so years we've been tapping into it for irrigation.

Guide to building the perfect rain barrel system

Guide to building the perfect rain barrel system | Water Resource | Scoop.it

Since the beginning of recorded time, mankind has been using collections systems to gather and store rain water for future use, and while the appearance of the systems has changed, the basic elements that make them up have not. All you need is a wide surface and a piping system to direct the water to the storage device.

Roofs and down spouts fulfill the first two requirements and are at the disposal of every homeowner, it’s getting a proper water storage device that trips up most would be water collectors.

I hope Canadians care about environmental issues more than Americans do. Americans tend to have an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude towards issues we deem are far away even though Canada is our neighbor. The glaciers will have a huge impact on the ecosystem and energy power once they melt. I fear that it is too late to help ourselves with these.
