It would appear that in Bhutan also a deeper view of water shortage is needed.  Drilling more bore wells into a decreaing water table is a short term solution - a way to recharge the aquifers and raise the water table is needed - different ways of doing this are available - and of course will be varied according to the terrain and local conditions.

will be interesting to see how quickly they can reduce the cost to the target of $0.95 a tonne.. and in some villages they need to have the supply of water there already - there is simply not tonnes of water available for purification.  Back to the basics.. Rain Water Harvesting principles.

Villagers started to build check dams and tanks by using funds under the District Rural Development Authority (drda) programme. They built 45 check dams over an area of 1,090 hectares (ha). 35,000 trees were planted.

A common tale of woe in India during the sry season - more and more wells and tube wells drying up and toxicity increasing in the water that is left.  The solution short term is to bring water in tankers - but it is not the real solution - water harvesting methods must be implemented immediately - both in rural areas and in towns.
