Water Conservation Graphic

Water Conservation Graphic | Water Conservation in Agriculture | Scoop.it

Water use became much higher from 1950-1980. However, the graphic shows water use in agriculture has decreased as the public has learned more about water conservation and made an effort to conserve water. The use of water in agriculture is becoming enviornmentally sustainable.

Overhead Irrigation

Overhead Irrigation | Water Conservation in Agriculture | Scoop.it

Water is an essential need for plant life and agricultural use throughout farming. Large quantities of water are consumed by plant use in order to prosper and grow. The water cycle is used to reuse the fresh water and maintain healthy, fresh soil. This is an example of overhead irrigation, a method of irrigation used to conserve water.

My Scoop on Water Conservation in Agriculture

As pressure is mounting to provide water to urban areas, water is being taken from agriculture and rural communities. This water used for urban areas is impacting the security of these farming communities. Water needs to be used more efficiently by these farming communities so that they can keep up with the declining water supply. Irrigated agriculture takes up a large amount of water, and this water needs to be conserved.

Some methods of water conservation are improved irrigation and  application efficiency. Another example is the increased capture and utilization of precipitation through rain barrels and other methods.  Reduced water use through adoption of conservation measures and new technologies for water management is also a very effective way to conserve water for agriculture. Overhead and drip irrigation are specific irrigation systems used to conserve water and prevent evaporation and runoff.

Changing irrigation systems can be very expensive. Usually farmers try to make the best use of their existing system in order to save water. This can be done by digging ditches to conserve runoff, and paying attention to natural soil moisture and rainfall. A large amount of water can be conserved by making their existing sytem more efficient.
