My Scoop on Water Conservation in Agriculture

In the world, the United States along with China, India, and Pakistan have half of the irrigated land.  The United States uses mostly freshwater for irrigation.  The largest potential for saving water is though changing irrigation practices, because that is where we use water the most.  If we can use irrigation efficiently, the environment will benefit from reduced water consumption and reduced amounts of energy needed to move the water.

We need to take into account the costs associated with water conservation as well.  For example, hydroponic agriculture is when crops are grown under greenhouse conditions with their roots in a rich solution, but no soil.  Water that isn't absorbed by the plants can be reused again, so this way uses 95% less water than other irrigation tecniques.  It is becoming more popular, however the costs are also higher for these more advanced irrigation agriculture.

Water conservation is something that needs to be addressed during irrigation practices, because water is used abundantly in farming.  The amount of water wasted can be drastically decreased if we use the correct techniques.  Although the cost may be greater now, in the long run it will pay off because of the amount of water saved.

Califorina produces a large amound of crops, leading the United States in many products, so it in turn, uses a lot of water. California needs to use water conservation effectively while not decreasing the amount of crops produced.  They use methods like irrigation systems and canal lining to promote water conservation.

Advoctaes in California want to build a new tunnel system to reverse the damage done by the government's current pump system.  Farmers do not want to allow the tunnel, fearing it will make the irrigation water salitier and take away part of their land.
