"A look at some fabulous artists living in London."

I have just discovered the Little London Observationist and Stephanie has opened up a whole new world of talented London artists I have not come across before! (with the exception of The Two Emilys, as I already subscribe to their blog). Well worth exploring on a dark winter's evening!

CAMDEN TOWN POSTER STUDIES : THE COB GALLERY

CAMDEN TOWN POSTER STUDIES : THE COB GALLERY | Voyage en Angleterre des 4° du collège Georges Martelot | Scoop.it

'The Camden Town Poster Studies is a year long portrait project, culminating in an exhibition in November 2013.

This will be the first solo show from Joshua Press, who has trained in both in London and at the Studio Escalier in France.

Press began his Poster Studies as an exploratory exercise in the management of light and form. The work is informed by the practice of Walter Sickert, whose Camden Town Nudes originally inspired Press to take up a paintbrush, and who lived and worked just around the corner from the gallery.

“On the rough-hewn surfaces of boards sourced from the localities he haunts, Press carves with light, creating constellations of portrait tiles. Exploring a form traditionally used as an aid to portrait painting, he turns his figurative training to combative ends. This becomes a painting of resistance with a sensitivity that renders the solidity of a brush stroke constantly both itself and, stubbornly, something else. There is a substantial immediacy to the work, a mineral quality, coinciding with a lightness of touch that can only be the result of prolonged exposure to the subject. Coarse and tender, with the softness of the map and the texture of the territory, the work is a restatement of vision.”

David Anderson

To launch the project, Cob Gallery is hosting an open studio showing Josh’s progress so far, and invites the community to be involved. Every Thursday, two slots will be available for public sittings. These can be booked through the gallery or directly with Josh via Twitter.'

London's East End is well known for its dark past, from Jack the Ripper to notorious 1960s gangsters the Krays, so it is no surprise that the area was also the birthplace of the creator of some of Hollywood's most famous scary movies.

What's on @ Shakespeare's Globe!

What's on @ Shakespeare's Globe! | Voyage en Angleterre des 4° du collège Georges Martelot | Scoop.it

"Shakespeare's Globe offers a theatrical season rich in variety

Three ground-breaking, international companies which came to London for Globe to Globe will return for a limited number of performances as part of wider international tours. A thrilling Venus & Adonis from South Africa, an enchanting Georgian  As You Like It, a wild Indian Tempest, and a searing Belarusian King Lear.

The Tempest with Roger Allam returning to play Prospero, Colin Morgan as Ariel in his Globe debut and Jessie Buckley as Miranda.A Midsummer Night’s Dream is always a joy, and Olivier Award winning Michelle Terry is coming back as Titania. Continuing with the supernatural, Eve Best will directMacbeth, with Joseph Millson as the title role joined by Samantha Spiro as Lady Macbeth and Bette Bourne as the Porter.

Three new plays will receive world premieres –The Lightning Child by Ché Walker, directed by Matthew Dunster and with music by Arthur Darvill, Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale will be directed by John Dove, andGabriel by Samuel Adamson, featuring English trumpet soloist, Alison Balsom.

We’re also squeezing five touring productions into our season. The three plays of Henry VI, under their original titles; Harry the Sixth,The Houses of York & Lancaster, The True Tragedy of the Duke of York, will visit venues around the UK, including playing three-in-a-day events on battlefields, and a visit to the Globe. Two small-scale tours will play across the UK and Europe, with Joseph Marcell playing King Lear, and a raucous all-female The Taming of the Shrew.

Fifteen shows, truly a season of plenty."
