"Are you wondering where to begin to adopt the Common Core Vocabulary Standards? While there are many specific vocabulary standards clearly listed in the K-12 Language strand, it's helpful and important to look at Academic Vocabulary from the big picture view known as Shift 6. Let's unpack it."

In this post Susan Oxnevad looks at the three tiers of vocabulary and discusses the need to target instruction on Tier 2 and Tier 3 words. There is a short video that provides an introducation to Academic Vocabulary as well as a look at some tools that woulr provide help for students learning Tier 2 words. Vocabulary: Crucial to Common-Core Success, New Research Says

Vocabulary: Crucial to Common-Core Success, New Research Says | Vocabulary | Scoop.it

In all the hubbub about the balance of fiction and nonfiction in the common core, you might well have been hearing less lately about its other expectations. One of those is a renewed focus on the teaching of vocabulary, especially academic vocabulary.

Huge Achievement Gaps

"There is too little teaching of vocabulary in general, and that children in higher-poverty schools tend to get even less of it than those in lower-poverty schools. When you combine that with the recognition that children in higher-poverty schools typically learn fewer words at home, as well, it's easy to see huge gaps taking shape."

“I’m bad with names”: How words are like people

“I’m bad with names”: How words are like people | Vocabulary | Scoop.it

Extract:

"Michael Hoey has hypothesized that when we come across a word or phrase, we not only notice and retrieve its meaning as Nation would assert, but on each encounter we also retain some information about where that word was found (e.g. its genre), the context in which it was met, the co-text (words before and after the word), and even where in the discourse it was (e.g. the introduction, the body, or the conclusion). This is the theory of “lexical priming,” which suggests that the real key to gaining vocabulary “depth” of knowledge (e.g. collocation) is meeting a word in various contexts over time."

Vocabulary Instructional Strategies: Marzano's 6-Step Process

Vocabulary Instructional Strategies: Marzano's 6-Step Process | Vocabulary | Scoop.it

"Effective vocabulary instruction is a key foundation to helping students acquire a wide and diverse vocabulary. Students need both direct and indirect instruction in vocabulary and word meanings as well as multiple exposures to words. It is through multiple exposures and repetition that students begin to understand the nuances of words and how to use them when speaking and writing."
