Cada vez que visito esta ciudad vuelvo a impresionarme de la energía y compromiso de muchos para convertir a Miami en una lugar de destino para startups de América Latina, o el famoso “Gateway for the Americas”, como les gusta decir. Instituciones como la Knight Foundation, Endeavor Miami, The LAB Miami y varios más están liderando estos esfuerzos, con interesantes resultados hasta ahora, por lo menos en cuanto a “ruido” y poner el tema en boca de todos.

En nuestro panel surgió la pregunta si, en nuestro rol de inversores, creíamos en Miami están dadas las condiciones para transformarse en un hub atractivo para startups, y se armó una interesante discusión. Sería genial que esto pasara, Miami es muy conveniente en varios aspectos para emprendedores de América Latina:

(i) cercanía (geográficamente está más cerca de LatAm que cualquier otro centro de EE.UU.)

(ii) culturalmente hay mucha afinidad con la región, incluído el idioma (es cada vez más difícil hablar inglés en Miami!)

(iii) la ciudad es atractiva por su actividad, clima y costo de vida

Por otro lado, los desafíos no son menores. Varios startups de nuestro portfolio decidieron abrir oficinas en Estados Unidos, pero muy pocos lo hicieron en Miami. El atractivo de abrir en San Francisco o Nueva York es alto, sobre todo para negocios tecnológicos donde estas ciudades son centros indiscutidos de innovación y negocios.

Una forma en la que Miami podría dar pelea sería generando una cultura de inversión en startups, sobre todo en etapas tempranas. Traducido: lograr que haya más gente escribiendo cheques para startups. El dinero está, sólo que recién empieza (lentamente) a volcarse a inversiones en emprendimientos. Acelerar este proceso de “educación” es clave para que Miami sea más atractiva para startups latinoameric

Estará pasando lo que viene pasando en Colombia desde hace mas de dos años? Que tanto es "ruido" y que tanto son resultados reales en "tracción"?
