Ciaran Corcoran's insight:

It is often overlooked that the constant increase in computer usage and the use of data centers to facilitate this, has a serious effect on the environment. Among other technologies developed to reduce power consumption, virtualization of servers and data centers is an increasingly popular method for businesses to increase their efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint.

1.2. Reasons to Use Virtualization

Ciaran Corcoran's insight:

Virtualization helps to optimize resources and enables a smooth migration process of a server from one environment to another. A server can be moved to a physical host with different hardware configurations. This lack of reliance on hardware compatibility means a server can be easily migrated in the case of hardware failure for instance.

Small Business IT Tips: - Virtualization

Small Business IT Tips: - Virtualization | Virtualization | Scoop.it

Using Virtual Machines to run your business services is probably the cheapest and easiest way to boost your business efficiency and lower costs... Maybe you have a web server, an Exchange server, a radius server, a database server, a firewall, and a file server...you could be using about 2500 WATTS!  That is a pretty great reason to consolidate all of your servers and have it pay for itself. Who says you need one of those large phone system boxes hanging on your wall that can only be serviced by an outside contractor.  How about a Voice Over IP System…All running from a Virtual Machine. The best part about virtualization is that there are paid versions… and there are FREE ones.  You could in theory run all of the suggested ideas above from a single machine with a Quad core processor and about 8GB of RAM.  Of course, server class hardware would be best, but it’s not required.

Ciaran Corcoran's insight:

Virtual machines can be used to recover data from old or obsolete forms of media and software, by emulating the media that supported the data. In a 2009 IBM study it was found that on average, a server used 425 Watts. The consolidation and virtualization of a company's many servers will greatly assist in reducing costs.
