At WGU, each student is assigned a personal faculty member to work with them as a mentor throughout their time at WGU.
Gabi Witthaus's insight:

This sounds like a good model for online education. WGU is a non-profit online university (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WGU).

Getting British grannies talking to kids in India: the Granny Cloud

Thanks to Ewan McIntosh for this description of Sugata Mitra's "Granny Cloud" experiment, in which British grannies engage with kids in schools in remote Indian areas via Skype. A brilliant low-cost, high-impact virtual mentoring programme, which built on Mitra's famed earlier project called hole-in-the-wall, in which he made computers available via a hole in the wall at child-height in various deprived parts of Indian cities and villages. Kids flocked to the computers, and through collaborative trial and error, taught themselves the computer skills and the English language skills needed for accessing information on the Web.

Jeanne K. Pritzker
Gabi Witthaus's insight:

Short video clip promoting the idea of becoming a 'virtual mentor' for a teenager in the US foster care system. This could involve sending one text message a week, or having a regular skype conversation. One of the things that older kids who have experienced this believe enabled them to become successful was having one caring adult in their lives.

South African teens get virtual mentoring from all over the world

South African teens get virtual mentoring from all over the world | Virtual mentoring | Scoop.it
Wow. This is just fantastic. Well done to Amy Stokes from the USA, who has started up a virtual mentoring programme for children orphaned by AIDS in South Africa, with caring volunteer adults all around the world. The video brought tears to my eyes. (In a good way.)

Of course the kids will learn keyboard skills and other computer literacy skills as a by-product - because the drive to communicate with that special someone is so great.

A fantastic idea and one which can be replicated with the right safety measures. It can also have an impact on the those in long term recovery from surgery or in hospital schools generally. Many educational institutions have a VLC, but it is the human interaction that is missing.
Gabi Witthaus's comment, May 30, 2011 4:49 PM
Yes, the possibilities are endless! And you're right, it's the human element that makes it work. Thanks for commenting :-)

e-Mentoring for young and vulnerable people

e-Mentoring for young and vulnerable people | Virtual mentoring | Scoop.it
This looks like a great organisation - they provide secure, e-mail mentoring for young and vulnerable people in the UK. The security seems to be based on the fact that both the mentor and the mentee's email addresses are encrypted, and so it is totally anonymous. Which sounds a bit impersonal, but the user comments indicate that the approach is successsful.
