HIV Handbook: facts, figures, and vaccines

HIV Handbook: facts, figures, and vaccines | Virology News | Scoop.it

The 1st of December marked World AIDS Day 2014, and saw millions of people from across the world pledging support for the eradication of HIV and the proper treatment of AIDS patients. Eradication remains the ultimate goal, and vaccines are almost certainly the tool for the job. But researchers have for decades struggled to tame a virus with so many defence mechanisms. With high profile disappointments, such as the Thai Trial, confidence waned in HIV vaccine candidates. But slowly different parts of the virus are being cracked by teams across the globe, and the Thai Trial’s ALVAC and AIDSVAX combo may even be making a comeback.

Forum on China-Africa Cooperation: what it means for health

Forum on China-Africa Cooperation: what it means for health | Virology News | Scoop.it
Investment in health is an essential component of the FOCAC. Whereas some laud China's investment strategy, others deplore that gains to health are hard to track. Andrew Green reports. At this year's Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Beijing pledged to build on previous commitments to improve health care on the continent, including promises to upgrade medical facilities, to invest in the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), and to train medical specialists. However, with the China's investments in Africa plateauing this year, experts said they did not anticipate a dramatic expansion of health projects. Beijing announced US$60 billion in financial support to Africa at this month's FOCAC, including $15 billion in aid and $10 billion that the Chinese Government will encourage private industry to invest. The 2018 total matches that of 2015, although the previous amount included only government investments.

Monkeypox contacts: a puzzling problem

Monkeypox contacts: a puzzling problem | Virology News | Scoop.it
When it emerged that two people infected with monkeypox had travelled by plane through one of the world's busiest airports, a media storm arose, with irresponsible headlines and exaggerations of risks for others in the UK and across the globe. The two patients—currently recovering in specialist units in London and Liverpool, UK—probably contracted the infection, which produces symptoms such as fever, headache, malaise, and the typical smallpox-like vesicular rash, from animals in Nigeria, where there is an ongoing outbreak of the virus. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has recorded 262 suspected cases of monkeypox since the outbreak began in September, 2017, including 113 confirmed cases and seven deaths. The Nigerian outbreak is likely to be the result of a local zoonotic spillover event from the virus' natural hosts—rodents. The disease, caused by a virus of the Orthopox genus, is usually self-limiting—although it has a mortality rate of 1–10%.
