Five phrases that should be banned from discussions on domestic violence

Five phrases that should be banned from discussions on domestic violence | Violence in Muslim Families | Scoop.it
When you're talking about domestic violence there are a series of outdated phrases that keep popping up.
Anas Coburn's insight:

This relatively short piece is from Australia -- but the message is very relevant to us all. Understanding the thinking behind common phrases people use in discussing violence within families helps us become stronger as change agents ourselves, more able to educate and build the will it requires in our communities to protect our families and change the harmful attitudes that still persist.

Older People Surviving Child Sexual Abuse | Pandora's Project | Violence in Muslim Families | Scoop.it
Older survivors of Child Sexual Assault may be revisited later in life by early trauma and wonder what is happening. Here is how to find support.
Anas Coburn's insight:

Important points are made in this discussion of older people surviving child sexual abuse. The mental and emotional challenges that surviving such experiences present can present decades after the abuse itself.... though it is not always the case that older survivors will go through flashbacks or other trauma symptoms.

I don't know  how many of you may have been surprised by the strength of the feelings expressed in the media by survivors of sexual assault by Bill Cosby whose abuse had happened decades before.   This article helps to explain how the damage can last a lifetime --- and the suffering can recur decades later.

Researcher discusses complications of sexual abuse within families

Researcher discusses complications of sexual abuse within families | Violence in Muslim Families | Scoop.it
As director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, David Finkelhor understands the impact sexual abuse by a parent has on children and how they respond. Abuse typically begins when the child is 7 to 9 years old and can continue until the early teens. That’s when the child has become more independent with the ability to resist, avoid the father or gain sufficient courage to disclose the abuse. By then, however, the abusive relationship may have persisted for six or seven years. Younger s
Anas Coburn's insight:

A brief article discussing some of the complexities of dealing with sexual abuse during families.  The Director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, David Finkelhor points to their new study that 1 in 4 17-yr old girls in the US has been sexually assaulted or abused. While noting that things are changing within the mainstream culture -- a lot more education is necessary, and in the end -- every parent must be aware of the signs their child is being abused..... These attributes in a marriage really kill the relationship. Based on decades of very rigorous social science, Gottman's insights are extremely useful. As an introduction to his work, or just as a friendly reminder, this short, 2 minute video is worth watching.  Conflict occurs in all marriages. There are many ways couples can handle it in a healthy fashion --but if one or more of the "four horsemen" show up in conflicts in your relationship -- there's serious trouble that needs to be addressed, and may require professional help to do so.

This short video raises an issue worth thinking about. It is becoming more common (though still not common enough) for bystanders to intervene when they see abuse of women in public -- but sadly, abuse of men in public by women draws smiles.  The Justice department reports a man is abused by a woman every 37 seconds in the Untied States.  We must work to make sure our communities are safe for everyone.

Feeling Like An Expert?

Feeling Like An Expert? | Violence in Muslim Families | Scoop.it

‘Know-it-alls’ don’t know as much as they think, new research finds.

Anas Coburn's insight:

This very brief blog post reports on a study concerning a disconnect between claimed expertise and actual knowledge.  I suggest that the phenomenon reported on here is quite generalizable --- that is, applies to many fields, not merely the one specifically studies.

The negative impact of placing too much trust in "the Experts" is one I hope all of us are familiar with.  As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to make the best possible decisions for our families -- and part of what this requires is that we inform ourselves adequately across a range of many issues.

A significant aspect of Project Sakinah's work is to provide resources for our community to inform and educate itself about family issues whose impacts spread far beyond those immediately affected. It behooves us all to increase the level of responsibility we take for our Community -- and this brief entry from PsyBlog provides yet another reason why.

One of the hallmarks of true expertise is humility. How often have we heard Physicians and Engineers, or any "professional," for that matter, holding forth topics about which they actually know little? As Muslims, we have a beautiful model in our true scholars --- who so often make no claims as to their expertise, describing themselves only as "students of knowledge."

Healthy relationships: Federal measure targets sex crimes

Healthy relationships: Federal measure targets sex crimes | Violence in Muslim Families | Scoop.it
Logical legislation introduced this week in the U.S. Senate aims to promote “safe relationship behavior” in public secondary schools with a focus on preventing sexual assault, domestic violence and dating violence.
Anas Coburn's insight:

The importance of learning about healthy relationships is being recognized at the highest levels of government -- there's a bill before the US Senate about advancing education in the "Teach Safe Relationships Act." In spite of this welcome level of activity, the fact remains that one cannot rely simply upon "the experts" to raise our children and teach them what they need to know about relationships between the genders.

The statistics on the sexual abuse of children are sickening, and sobering. Just a couple you may not be aware of -- 1 in five children are solicited sexually while on the internet -- and an average serial child molester may have as many as 400 victims in his lifetime -- with consequences that persist throughout the lives of his victims.
