Here's The Tricky Math Question One CEO Asks To Size Up Job Candidates

Here's The Tricky Math Question One CEO Asks To Size Up Job Candidates | Video Resume and Application Tips | Scoop.it

Jeff Zwelling, CEO and cofounder of Convertro, a provider of marketing and advertising measurement, says he often turns to unique, and sometimes tricky, questions during job interviews so that he can get a better sense of who the candidate is.

For example, in the middle of the conversation, he often throws in this curveball math question: A hammer and a nail cost $1.10, and the hammer costs one dollar more than the nail. How much does the nail cost?

It's simple, but tricky.

"Some candidates will instantly blurt out 10 cents, which is obviously wrong," he says. "They don't have to get the exact right answer, which is a nickel, but I want to see them at least have a thought process behind it."

Zwelling understands that math isn't everyone's forte, but he wants them to realize that "10 cents is too easy of an answer, and that if it was that easy, I wouldn't be asking it."

He also asks tricky questions, he says, to see how the candidate may perform on the job.

"If the person is hired, he or she will eventually have to sit across the table from top CMOs and will need to be able to answer the tough questions that come at them, to think on their feet, and to feel confident in their responses," Zwelling concludes. http://gojobio.com/articles/

Don’t Discuss Irrelevant Job Experiencesand Achievements

Don’t Discuss Irrelevant Job Experiencesand Achievements | Video Resume and Application Tips | Scoop.it

Employers at big corporations don’t care if you dressed as Donald Duck in Disneyland for extra cash to pay off your tuition while going to college. You’d be better off saving that information for a fun conversation at your next company lunch meeting. However if you were the executive manager at a retail store, and are applying for a sales position, you can illustrate the people, organizational, and leadership skills that you acquired in your previous position.

On the same note, no one cares that you were voted “Prettiest Eyes” or “Most Likely to Succeed” in your high school yearbook. Nor do they care if you won the county fair talent show three years in a row. Even if you did nail those Mariah Carey high-notes. Make sure your achievements are relevant to the positions you are applying for.

Don’t Use a Generic Resume for Every Job

Don’t Use a Generic Resume for Every Job | Video Resume and Application Tips | Scoop.it

The Job Search is hard enough as it is. Don’t make it harder on yourself. You are NOT saving time by using the same resume for every job you apply to. Each resume should correspond with each position you are applying for. Some positions might require different skills than others. Match the skills you have with the skills each job requires. Know each company you are applying for as well. Make sure each resume corresponds with the company that will be receiving the resume. OR ditch the paper resume and create a video resume!SHOW your interpersonal skills, tech ability, and winning personality instead of writing it on a resume and hoping employers believe you. Why Recruiters Don’t Disclose Reasons For Rejection | Video Resume and Application Tips | Scoop.it
An organization conducting job interviews is not obligated to provide reasons as to why it did not hire a certain candidate for the job. And yet, job applicants continue to question why they were not selected despite performing well in the interview round.

Here are principles on which to start and build your company.
GoJobio's insight:
2. Competence

Competence, or consistently delivering superior results, is how radical intrapreneur and GM plant manager Bob Lintz transformed a failing $250 million stamping plant in Cleveland, Ohio, into a billion-dollar organization that's consistently been one of the world's best companies for more than a decade.

Competence is key for Maximilian Huc, co-founder of the job search platform GoJobio.com: “I try to find individuals who embody the same drive as me to not just turn a profit, but to first and foremost make a difference in the process.”

Applying for a job- Here's some tips for your resume!

Applying for a job- Here's some tips for your resume! | Video Resume and Application Tips | Scoop.it
Perfect your Resume

You revised and polished your resume and you have an interview. Congratulations!

Most people don’t even get this far. But don’t throw away your resume just yet. Often there are time l apses between the date you have applied and the date you are interviewing. Update these on your resume. Recheck for grammar mistakes or misspellings.

Have someone else take a look at it. It’s easy to miss the mistakes in our own writing, especially after looking at it so much. Take a few copies of the resume with you; you may have multiple people interviewing you.And even if you have already sent them a resume, they will probably ask for another one during your interview.

Also have ready a list of references. Make sure to include: first and last name of each reference, what companies they worked for, their positions, and contact information. If the company is interested in hiring you, they will call your references! Choose previous employees that have valued and appreciated you and most importantly, benefited from you!

The Most Valuable Skill Every Recruiter Overlooks

The Most Valuable Skill Every Recruiter Overlooks - The Entrepreneur's Journey - Medium

Read what one of the true masters in HR says about recruiting.

To be a great leader is to be a great listener instead of a talker.

GoJobio's insight:

Think about it. When a project isn’t getting done, or somebody is unhappy, how do you move forward? Do you go into the solution right away? Absolutely not. Before you fix the problem, you need to figure out what the problem actually is. And you’re not going to figure that out by walking into a room and taking charge immediately. Why are we 2 weeks behind? Why is something at a standstill? The way you win is by listening to the reasons WHY things aren’t going well. Once you have assessed those, you can jump into problem solving mode.

Don't Be Casual

Don't Be Casual | Video Resume and Application Tips | Scoop.it
It's always better to be overdressed than under dressed. Brush your teeth. Put on deodorant. Put on perfume. (Don't go overkill with this though. You don't want your interviewer to pass out.) Brush your hair. Women, put on makeup. (modestly) Look the part!
GoJobio's insight:
First impressions are BIG! You don't want to show up in jeans and a t-shirt. Even if the company you're applying is not a suit-and-tie type of business. You are still being interviewed. You are still hoping to land the job.
