GOG: Gamers are not criminals and do not need DRM

The video games industry should follow in the footsteps of the music sector and rid itself of digital rights management (DRM).
Justin Perkins's insight:

Whilst I love Steam for its convenience, I can't help but agree with GoG. It's helped along by the fact they package the installations and such for their games so tidily. Am I being converted? We'll see.

Steam but without any DRM or online requirements – that's effectively the pitch for CDProjekt's new GOG Galaxy client.
Justin Perkins's insight:

This is a very interesting new online platform. Given the success of GOG and the gripes I've heard from people about Steam's control over what they own (or don't, as the agreement states), coupled with CDProjekt's ability to create greatness from very little (The Witcher series is one of the most visually impressive series' around, and was made with a fraction of the budget of some AAA Western titles), I'm excited to see how this will develop.

It's Time To Start Treating Video Game Industry Like The $21 Billion Business ...
The Consumerist
The majority of video games in the U.S. are purchased and played by adults.
Justin Perkins's insight:

The shifting landscape that is the games industry is one I'm having trouble coming to grips with. While it is a reality I understand I, along with a number of long-time 'gamers' as most like to call themselves these days, aren't all too keen on this shift towards the mainstream. As video games become more about business and less about what people will enjoy, more about profit than content, it's getting harder to find the real gems that were once plentiful in their numbers. Nintendo seems like the last bastion of enjoyment, but their consoles lack the variety that most current gamers crave. Some indie developers are also pushing new boundaries, but there's limits to what an indie developer can achieve, and many indie games are swept under the rug, so some of these breakthroughs are overlooked completely and games are none the better for them. Not that there isn't hope in this new age, and I'm sure over time as practices like the ones appearing now become more and more commonplace we'll all adapt to this, but personally, it feels like the industry's getting darker. To say I'm worried about where things are headed, well, that's an understatement.

I feel the need to point out how beautiful this game is. I'm still a bit torn over Kojima's decision to drop David Hayter for Hollywood star Kiefer Sutherland, but good lord the Fox Engine his team has created for this game looks... astonishing, honestly. Gameplay previews show he's taken into account a few concerns raised by long-time fans of the series and if past instalments are anything to go by, attention to detail will be amazing (I've heard rumours of the game's horses occasionally... evacuating their bowels). On an unrelated note, that song has been stuck in my head for a week.
