In the article, "It's a Duel: How Do Violent Video Games Affect Kids?, the author by Shankar Vedantam explores the different claims made by scholars for why they are concerned, or not, with the violence in video games. He gathers that the research with which either parties are defending their claims are the same but interpreted in different ways.
I was incredibly intrigued by this article. I was mostly surprised by the findings. Most research has confirmed that violence in video games do desensitize people to violence around them. I was under the assumption that, that was still unclear. I further noticed that the issue is not whether you are desensitized by violence or not, the real concern would be if that in some way that would effect your interaction with others. That seems to be unclear. In a way I feel like I have more questions about the psychology of men and what governs their behavior. In any case I feel that I at least know the right question to ask. Do activities that require us to react in a violent nature but do not do harm to others cause us to react violently in scenarios that would not normally be acceptable to be violent in.
I believe that the article was clearly written and had a great flow to it. It gave concrete evidence for the point that were being made and also provoked thought beyond the reading. It was enjoyable.

In the article, The Industry Must Take a Socially Responsible Stand on Violent Video Games, the author, Randy White, builds up a set of arguments that position the companies that create and distribute violent video games as one of the causes for violence within teens. Furthermore, he requests a call of action from these companies to be more socially responsible with the entertainment they make available for children.
I disagree with Mr. White, not because of his view but because of the way he presents his argument. He will either make a very general statement and says that its sufficient proof of his case like when he says,"The media and game industries argue that exposure to violence in their products does not make children violent. Common sense and research says that's just not true." Or he will make a claim without any reference to his source like when he says."To understand this culturalization concept, all you need do is look at some other cultures in the world where peaceful resolution of differences is still taught to children and where violence has no place." Both comments are erroneous and unclear. In the first comment he states "common sense and research" are what draws his conclusion. He later mentions combat training and the increase on aggravated assault in the country. Neither of the comments mention any research or by whom it was done. He doesn't include where he got the statistical evidence he presented or when it was dated or how the general data is connected to teenagers. On his second comment regarding other countries behavior he does not know or mention that some of the countries he is mentioning are considered emerging markets that would not have the mass access to video games the US does. How then can you compare the effects of violence in video games on a population that is not as saturated with video game content as the US? Interestingly enough, while researching the topic of middle eastern countries and the presents of video games in those areas I found and article by the Wall Street Journal that stated the increased growth and revenue being produced in the area by the video game industry.
Personally I think that the writing was hollow. A lot of words but no substance behind it. He gives just enough for the readers to share his conclusion. I think this type of writing can be very dangerous.
