developing employment opportunities in Agribusiness for individuals with a disability

developing employment opportunities in Agribusiness for individuals with a disability | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
borrowed from http://www.arthurandfriends.org/
Arthur & Friends is a program of NORWESCAP a 501(c)3 non-profit (www.norwescap.org) in northern New Jersey which is developing employment opportunities in Agribusiness occupations and industries based on the strengths, needs, and desires of individuals with a disability, including self-employment and entrepreneurship where appropriate.

Thanks to Scott Kornsberg of American Hydroponics for the inspiration and the introduction.

Hopefully, Diverse City Civitan and Project AngelFaces and other local, Las Vegas entities and collaborators can make something similar happen here in Las Vegas

Challenge Industries, Inc … a Success Story
Challenge Industries, Inc, in Ithaca, NY provides vocational services for individuals who have disabilities, which present a handicap to employment. Recently Finger Lakes Fresh, a program of Challenge Industries was featured on a New York State Public Television special, “Homework Hotline.” Cornell University has licensed operation of its hydroponics greenhouse -- which produces herbs and 6,000 heads of lettuce weekly -- to Challenge Industries, providing jobs for more than a dozen workers with disabilities that present a handicap to employment. The two part series (view it http://aboutchallenge.org/newsite/) focused first on the technology involved at the facility and then on the Challenge consumers who make it work.

The series theme was “green” and they noted that not only does the greenhouse grow local produce, not requiring shipment from California, but it also provides a wonderful employment opportunity for individuals who want to work.

An aspect that the series did not cover was that the greenhouse is just one example of the Challenge vision for social enterprise. As Finger Lakes Fresh prospers it can offer more opportunities for employment and it will help to support the nonprofit mission of Challenge.

It sometimes seems that traditional financial supports for nonprofit missions have been cleverly designed to prevent creative solutions. This can make doing the right thing even harder. During our work we occasionally lose sight of both our progress and our successes. The PBS crew though reminded us that the struggle is ultimately worth it.

Challenge will continue working on creative solutions and this will involve some risk, the occasional setbacks, and we hope the more frequent success. We believe we are on the right track and have both a powerful mission and a greatly supportive community. Pat r i ck McKe e President, Challenge Industries, Inc.
