Should journalists pay sources?

Should journalists pay sources? | Verdade - Fim Último do Jornalismo | Scoop.it

Is it essential to pay public officials - police officers, prison warders, civil servants and nurses - or members of the military to obtain stories? Would investigative journalism as we know it wither away if such payments were outlawed? Roy Greenslade supports the views of Andrew Jennings and Nick Davies that stories can be obtained without money changing hands.

Hacking for truth

Hacking for truth | Verdade - Fim Último do Jornalismo | Scoop.it

Chris Mooney, author of “The Republican Brain,” said he used to be wedded to the Enlightenment view, that if you put forth good information and argue rationally, people will come to accept what is true. The problem, he said, is that people are wired to believe facts that support their worldview. It’s called cognitive bias.

Marketing, Journalism, and Truth as Competitive Advantage

Marketing, Journalism, and Truth as Competitive Advantage | Verdade - Fim Último do Jornalismo | Scoop.it
Truth as a strategy

I think expectations of “truth” and transparency is another way the social web have brought journalism and marketing together. For a brand to have integrity and to be successful, it can’t be spinning the truth around any more. There are a million watch dogs out there now and any one of them can sniff out a fake.

A few weeks ago, I was working with some marketers for a hotel chain and we were discussing negative hotel reviews. “We don’t mind them,” they told me. “It makes us more real.”

Interesting. Truth as a marketing strategy.

My hunch is that a few years ago, that is not necessarily what their reaction would have been. In marketing, truth is the new black.

Maybe journalism and marketing are getting closer than we thought? What do you think?

WikiLeaks: real journalism or irresponsible whistleblowing?

WikiLeaks: real journalism or irresponsible whistleblowing? | Verdade - Fim Último do Jornalismo | Scoop.it
George Orwell wrote that "in a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act," and while I have many misgivings about WikiLeaks director Julian Assange, one has to admit there's something profoundly mutinous and intriguing...

Truth-Telling: What is Truth?

Truth-Telling: What is Truth? | Verdade - Fim Último do Jornalismo | Scoop.it

Everyone has a different perspective of what the truth actually is.  There are whole truths, half truths, lies and more, and all have variable definitions.  The worst part is, even if two people are familiar with and accept one definition, it is impossible to objectively measure the truth or the lie.  Within one single news article, there are many layers of honesty and deception--either in the amount of information given, the way the information is given, and especially what information is not given.  The above picture depicts the difference two sources can have in dealing with the truth.
