Venture Capitalists Aren't Investing In Black Entrepreneurs

Venture Capitalists Aren't Investing In Black Entrepreneurs | Venture Capital Black America | Scoop.it
Investing in high-growth companies creates jobs while generating more wealth for investors. The formula has worked for the private venture capital investment community. Unfortunately, no such active community exists in black America.

If Black America is to change the current paradigm of a widening wealth gap compared to White America and a rate of unemployment consistently much higher than the national average, it must recognize an immediate need to establish its own private equity investment community and establish strong ties with the current infrastructure that has decades of experience.

Notre Dame provides a great example for HBCU's. Dave Brenner, Innovation Park's president and CEO, describes the Park as a bridge between the University and the marketplace.

Innovation Park, located just south of Notre Dame's campus, provides short-term space and advisory services to entrepreneurs while they start new companies. Its client companies either have previous ties to the University or are looking to make connections to resources at Notre Dame.

Creating an 'Ecosystem' for Minority Entrepreneurs

Creating an 'Ecosystem' for Minority Entrepreneurs | Venture Capital Black America | Scoop.it

To foster entrepreneurship among minorities and in urban centers, a concentration of wealthy investors and academic, government and business institutions need to combine forces.

Urban centers across the country need to develop "ecosystems" that support entrepreneurs, particularly those whose rapid-growth companies create jobs in minority communities.

We've complained bitterly about conditions controlled by the majority demographic, but ignored opportunities to invest in establishing a viable entrepreneurial ecosystem to generate new jobs.

The reality is Black America is, by most any measure, suffering an economic DEPRESSION. And the way out of any economic downturn is through high-growth entrepreneurship.

How Software Is Eating Venture Capital

An entrepreneur I met recently has several Sand Hill Road venture capitalists (VCs) eating out of his hands. Having launched their product on Kickstarter, they are collecting in pre-orders at the rate of upwards of $20,000 a day. With $3 million in pre-orders at hand, VCs are begging to invest – or get in on this opportunity. The pre-money valuation has risen into the “obscene” category. Without Kickstarter, this company would have been laughed out of any VC meeting with a terse comment – “we don’t do hardware!” As Marc Andreessen correctly pointed out, software is eating the world. And now software is eating venture capital! Online portals like Angellist may have just begun nibbling at toes of Sand Hill road. VCs are burying their head in the sand (or silicon, depending on the geography).Foundry Group is one of the first VCs to look at this wave as an opportunity (as opposed to a threat) and have launched FG Angels syndicating investments via AngelList. Give such online marketplaces a few more years and it will reconfigure the VC landscape completely.

Hassan Ahmed is a Bachelors of Business Management final year student from Wajir. The Northern Kenya town has few high schools let alone institution of higher learning. Ahmed would have relocated to Nairobi or one of the major cities to get a chance to pursue a degree. But thanks to virtual campuses, Ahmed will graduate with a BBM degree next year.

“The virtual campus provides quality education and students have access to standard course materials and online lectures” says the Mount Kenya University student.

The divide

The divide | Venture Capital Black America | Scoop.it
Mike Green wants black America in the 21st-century tech economy. He plans to start the revolution in one of the country’s whitest cities.

Programs that try to alleviate the economic inequities plaguing African-American communities are nothing new. But America21 is one of the first groups to target high-tech and Internet ventures, and to try and create a comprehensive solution focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, as well as access to risk capital and “high-growth” entrepreneurship.
