Meet Varun Thapar From KCT Group

Meet Varun Thapar From KCT Group | Atul Verma | Scoop.it

Varun Thapar is an entrepreneur and the Executive Vice Chairman of the KCT Group of Companies. The great grandson of Karam Chand Thapar, founder of the Thapar Group of Companies, Varun is the fourth generation of his family to be at the helm of the business. His father, Mr. Vikram Thapar, is currently the Chairman of the Company but plays a nonexecutive role, leaving the executive leadership of the businesses to his son.

Thapar completed his education from Brown University, USA, where he double majored in European History and Economics. After a successful consulting stint with the Exeter Group in Boston, MA, Thapar returned to India in 2008 to take over the management of his family business interests.

Over the past decade, with his hands on approach to management, Varun has focused on restructuring the group, growing the core business, and diversifying into new areas. The core business operations of the group – coal logistics, aquaculture and real estate – have grown considerably under his leadership.

Equally keeping an eye on making the Group future ready, he has also spearheaded the Group’s diversification into two new areas: renewable energy, the group having established wind farms across the country; and container and allied products manufacturing.

Best management practices in pond preparation - Varun Thapar

Pond preparation plays an important role of providing the shrimp with optimum conditions for their survival and growth. Hence, success of shrimp farming largely depends upon effective pond preparation. Poor preparation on the other hand can result in deterioration of the soil and release of toxic compounds to the water body. It can also lead to pond sludge accumulation.

Here are some useful tips that you must follow if you want to make huge profits in the seafood business.

Draining out water from the pond entirely helps in removing disease carrying crustaceans from the crops of the pond. Blocking the inlets helps in preventing other sources of water from entering the ponds. Pumps are useful to remove clogged water inside the pond. Removing any barnacles, snails and gastropods manually is also a good practice.

In order to increase the water holding capacity of the pond, compact the bunds to prevent water seepage. Water depth must also be considered and kept at a minimum of 1.2 meter at the middle.

Decayed unfed feed, dead algae and planktons along with fecal matter of shrimp cause stress or death of shrimps. Hence removing them frequently is essential.

Sunlight is excellent for killing fish eggs, algal spores and any other predators in the ponds. Hence, sun drying the pond till it loses all the moisture, every once in a while is a practice everyone must follow.

Ploughing the pond every 2-3 days is also important as it oxidizes the organic matter and reduces gastropods.

For minimal energy input, always follow a proper layout while installing the aerators. Poor layout will lead to erosion and increase the amount of sediment. This can affect the lifespan of ponds and lead to increase in maintenance costs.

The leading aquaculture companies in India such as the Avanti Feeds and the Waterbase Limited by KCT Group are earning huge profits, which you can too by following good pond preparation practices.
