Whatever date you’re projecting for the first urban air taxi to take flight, Mark Cousin is betting it will happen sooner. But then, he’s paid to be disruptive.

“I firmly believe this technology will come quicker than people imagine,” he told the Canadian Aerospace Summit in Ottawa in November.

Cousin is the chief executive officer of A³, an arms length unit of Airbus in Silicon Valley, a position he assumed on Dec. 1 after serving as head of demonstrators for the company.

 

Vahana, the all electric, self-piloted, VTOL aircraft from A³ by Airbus, completed its first full-scale flight test on Feb. 1, 2018, reaching a height of five metres (16 feet) before descending safely.

Milling can be performed in many, including up milling, ramping, and circular interpolation. The type of milling chosen is based on the part feature being created in that operation. For example, you would never choose the same type of milling motion or tool for face milling that you would for deep pocketing.

The biggest factor in the equation, however, is the material being cut. It doesn’t very often happen that the material falls in the Goldilocks zone of being “just right.” It can be too hard, too brittle, and even too soft.

United Tech Breakup on the Table as Megadeal Nears Completion - Bloomberg

United Technologies Corp. tumbled the most in three years after the company underwhelmed investors with a weak cash-flow forecast from a record acquisition and a $3 billion price tag for a newly unveiled breakup plan.

The Collins Aerospace Systems division -- formed from the $23 billion purchase of Rockwell Collins that was completed this week -- will generate free cash flow of no more than $750 million next year, United Technologies said Tuesday. That trailed the $1.28 billion average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

China backs UTC aerospace deal now expected to close within days

Nov. 23--China's regulators on Friday approved the $30 billion acquisition of aerospace manufacturer Rockwell Collins Inc. by United Technologies Corp., clearing the way for the Connecticut conglomerate to close on the deal and stake its claim as a dominant player in the aerospace industry.

In its anti-monopoly review, China's State Administration for Market Regulation attached conditions that UTC and Rockwell Collins must divest certain assets.

Investors cheered the fall of the last regulatory hurdle, sending Rockwell Collins shares up 9.2 percent, to close at $141.63. UTC rose 2.7 percent, ending the day at $129.04.

'Quebec is an embarrassment': Province urged to do more on cybersecurity

MONTREAL—On Sept. 10, municipal employees in a region between Montreal and Quebec City arrived at work to discover a threatening message on their computers notifying them they were locked out of all their files.

In order to regain access to its data, the regional municipality of Mekinac was told to deposit eight units of the digital currency Bitcoin into a bank account—roughly equivalent to $65,000.

Mekinac’s IT department eventually negotiated the cyber extortionists down and paid $30,000 in Bitcoin, but not before the region’s servers were disabled for about two weeks.

After seven years circling the skies in search of a safe haven, the former Toronto Aerospace Museum has finally touched down with its historic aircraft collection at Edenvale Aerodrome (airport code CNV8), some 100 kilometres (63 miles) northwest of Toronto.

Pictured is a full-scale replica of the Avro Arrow at Downsview Airport with Canadian Forces Snowbirds flying in formation in the background. 

The first truckloads of aircraft and artifacts started to arrive at Edenvale in early November and the museum’s full-scale Avro Arrow replica will move from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Edenvale at a later date.

GE unveils new supersonic commercial jet engine

GE Aviation has given impetus to the revival of civilian supersonic flight by revealing a new family of engines designed to fly faster than the speed of sound. Called the Affinity, the new engine will be incorporated into the Aerion AS2 supersonic business jet, which is being developed in partnership with Lockheed Martin, GE Aviation and Honeywell, and could cut the time of a transatlantic flight by three hours.

Embraer-Boeing aviation deal blocked by Brazilian court | Reuters

Embraer shares in Sao Paulo closed 2.42 percent lower, although it remained too early to say whether the injunction will actually block or significantly affect the deal. Labor groups in Brazil often bring court challenges against significant business deals and the injunction could be reversed.

The decision forbids Embraer’s board of directors from signing the deal to create a joint venture on commercial aviation that Boeing would control. Boeing declined to comment and Embraer did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC), a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., announced it has received approval from Transport Canada to increase cycle limits on its PT6A-140, -140A and -140AG engines.

These increases–made possible through comprehensive parts testing and model analyses–will extend the life of Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) parts such as the power and compressor turbine disks and the impeller.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.—America’s next moon landing will be made by private companies—not NASA.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced Thursday that nine U.S. companies will compete to deliver experiments to the lunar surface. The space agency will buy the service and let private industry work out the details on getting there, he said.

The goal is to get small science and technology experiments to the surface of the moon as soon as possible. The first flight could be next year; 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first manned moon landing.

“We’re going at high speed,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, head of NASA’s science mission directorate, which will lead the effort.

The addition of alloying elements can not only strengthen molybdenum alloy in solid solution and maintain its low-temperature plasticity but also form a stable and dispersive carbide phase and improve the strength and recrystallization temperature of the alloy. Boeing has brought together the major fuselage sections to form the first 777X airplane that will take to the skies in 2019. Boeing teams connect the airplane’s nose, mid and aft sections in the company’s factory in Everett, Wash. 

In a major production milestone called “final body join,” Boeing teams connected the airplane’s nose, mid and aft sections in the company’s factory in Everett, Wash. The jet now measures 252 feet long (77 metres) from nose to tail, making it the longest passenger jet the manufacturer has ever produced.

Nissan disclosed it had investigated Ghosn for “several months” for under-reporting his compensation and “personal use of company assets.” The investigation stemmed from “a whistleblower report,” according to the company.

A preliminary study of a Canada-ASEAN trade agreement has been done, but experts suggest it could take years to finalize an agreement with the 10-nation bloc, which includes the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma.
