How Technology Trends Have Influenced the Classroom | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it
Teachers all over America are faced with this challenge of keeping students engaged in the classroom when their world outside of school is one of constant engagement and stimulation. Knowing the world outside of our institutional walls is only one step in addressing modern learning styles. How to act and adjust schools today is the next step in making the classroom of today ready for tomorrow.

Technology in education: if students aren't worried, why are teachers? | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

I couldn't agree more. As teachers, our role must change to one that enables, guides, personalises and embraces digital technology as a fundamental part of student learning. The most dangerous thing we can do to our students is to keep doing what our teachers and professors did to us:

I have always wondered why teachers, some not all, are hesitant about using mobile devices for the learning process. Some of the worry is that it's new and the student know more about the devices in general. This news report interviewed some teachers to see what they thought.

Online universities 2.0: Taking education to the next level - worldwide

Online universities 2.0: Taking education to the next level - worldwide | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

A couple of years back, the very essence of education was to get enrolled in a prestigious university and attend regular classes. The Internet played no role in that. But not anymore; now, no matter where you are in the world, you can get educated, mostly free of charge, on different subjects. You choose what you want to learn and how. This is not only more practical, but a tremendous success. I am convinced that it will, over time, shift global education patterns and ultimately make the world a more even playing field, no matter where you start out -- all you need is access to a computer, Internet and the will to learn.

Online technology as a disruptive ingredient has brought a complete overhaul in our education system. The late 20th century witnessed a possible emergence of distance learning through Internet. Slowly and steadily, this paved way for several universities offering online courses and classes, and thus empowering thousands of people like never before. The growing popularity of online education can be further emphasized by the findings of a recent survey conducted in the University of Pennsylvania. The survey revealed that nearly 80 percent of the people who took admission in an online course were through with their bachelor's degree. Learning is now like ordering food in a restaurant, one class at a time.

Schools needs IT professionals with a passion for education | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"Is your technology dept. run by an IT professional or an educator?

Over the past several years I've seen K-12 school districts on both sides of this proverbial fence, and I also have acquaintances and colleagues in one roll or the other. However, I've seen very little discussion on the topic, and it's a shame. Real conversation about this position needs to happen. There are undoubtedly hundreds of Superintendents staffing this position for the wrong reasons."

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

The children and media research community has been buzzing with frustration at the viral circulation of Cris Rowan's Huffington Post column, "10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12." The piece pretty well defines "hack-ademic" writing, in which an author throws lots of learned-sounding terms and citations at a lay reader, while obscuring misinterpretations and fuzzy logic. Here are 10 reasons why Rowan's column is flawed.

If you're going to ignore social media in the classroom, then [..] stop pretending that you're helping low-income children overcome the digital divide if you aren't going to teach them how to communicate online.
Social media is here. It's just another resource and doesn't have to be a distraction from learning objectives. Social media is another tool that you can use to make your classroom more engaging, relevant and culturally diverse.

Google Apps, I believe are leading the way to student productivity. As teachers, we may see this as another hurdle in learning new technology, but students will grasp the concepts of Drive, Sharing, Collaborating, and etc, much easier than their teachers. I never thought about using the drawing as a whiteboard tool. Will have to give it a shot. Our district currently doesn't support hangouts, but with iPads we can probably use facetime in much the same way as described.

I find it interesting that we want to prepare good citizens. Preparing good people with strong character leads to good citizens. I will take the latter over the former, because I will get the former. Plato had a theory of educating for good citizens. It was very narrow. Is that what we want?

Educators are always looking for new ways to make learning fun for their students. For that reason, many teachers have begun incorporating popular video games into their classroom curriculum.
