Three Working Models to Integrate Technology in Your Teaching

Three Working Models to Integrate Technology in Your Teaching | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"Technology is obviously an essential element in our instructional toolkit. Knowing how and when and for what purposes to use this technology is much more important than the technology itself...

An important step in the process of effective integration of technology in education is having a pedagogical approach supported by a theoretical framework to ground your technology practices inside the classroom."

Technology is a tool. When to use, how to use it, why you use...these are some of the questions that each of us must consider. To help us effectively integrate technology it is helpful to have a pedogogical background or framework. This post explores three approaches:

* SAMR Model - Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefintion

* TPACK - Content Knowledge, Pedagogical Knowledge, Technological Knowledge and the overlapping knowledges that occur: TP Knowledge which helps us understand how to make content more accessible; TC Knowledge which helps us pair or combine appropriate technology to content; and PC Knowledge which allows us to pair pedagogy with content.

* Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs paired with Technology

This article presents a great overview of all three of these pedagogical approaches, and all have been covered in this Scoop.it so if you are looking for additional information do a search here.

4 ways to integrate Scoop.it with WordPress | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Before we even launched our public version, we recognized that a lot of content curators were also occasional or regular bloggers and started to offer ways to integrate with Wordpress - the leading blogging platform. Since then, we've seen a lot of our users leverage this integration as well as more and more of our Enterprise clients wanting to combine content curation through Scoop.it and the CMS capabilities of Wordpress for their sites. So we've multiplied the ways you could integrate with a Wordpress site or blog and here's a recap of how to make this work.

The implications for learning engagement are significant.  Recent data suggests that mobile engagement can potentially target 93% of the world's population.  Learning design must shift to accommodate these growing patterns for engagement - instructional design and knowledge of more dynamic mobile platforms will need to become more common.  Universities are still a decade or more behind current trends.  What will blended and elearning look like in another few years if anyone takes notice of this?

While not strictly "open source", this is a very interesting means of decentralizing the internet that creates a network that can not be easily taken down or "controlled/censored" by anyone, anything or any government.

Vellum acts as a reading list  for your Twitter feed, finding all the links that are being shared by those you follow on Twitter and displaying them each with their full titles and descriptions.

This flips the Twitter model, treating the links as primary and the commentary as secondary (you can still see all the tweets about each link, but they are less prominent).

Vellum puts a spotlight on content, making it easy to find what you should read next.

New competency-based programs at Lipscomb could be model for liberal arts colleges | Inside Higher Ed | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Competency-based education is a hot idea, albeit not a new one. But as it is with anything in higher education, there is great variation among numerous emerging models. And understanding how they work is complicated by the fact that competency-based programs don’t look like much like most peoples’ vision of college.

On the least-ambitious end is an approach that merely embeds “competencies” into a conventional degree program. Loosely defined, a competency is a specified knowledge, skill or ability that a student can demonstrate, typically through an assessment.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's curator insight, May 4, 2014 12:16 PM

"In other words, one of the great teacher misunderstandings is that we have to teach the understanding for understanding to occur. On the contrary, as mystery stories, movies, and (especially) video games reveal, the learner is not only perfectly capable of drawing appropriate inferences, such activity is key to increasing intellectual engagement and reducing the boredom of schooling.  And ironically, the literature on student misconception reveals that in spite of clear “teaching” of big ideas, many students do not understand what they have been taught (even if they pass our quizzes)."
