The Sad Reality Of Education Technology

The Sad Reality Of Education Technology | Sharing online to enrich learning | Scoop.it

The sad reality is that most schools still believe that they are “teaching with technology” because they have a computer lab where they teach students important skills like word processing and how to create Power Point presentations. This may have been a worthwhile skill to teach 15 years ago, but the fact that we haven’t adapted as technology has is a clear example of how slow schools are to respond to the changing needs of our students.

Yes!! Why are we still teaching PowerPoint to 2nd graders? Will they really be using PPT when they reach middle school? Thank you!!

Curriculum: Understanding YouTube & Digital Citizenship – Google in Education | Sharing online to enrich learning | Scoop.it

"We have devised an interactive curriculum aimed to support teachers of secondary students (approximately ages 13-17). The curriculum helps educate students on topics like:

YouTube’s policies
How to report content on YouTube
How to protect their privacy online
How to be responsible YouTube community members
How to be responsible digital citizens

We hope that students and educators gain useful skills and a holistic understanding about responsible digital citizenship, not only on YouTube, but in all online activity."

What Schools are Really Blocking When They Block Social Media

What Schools are Really Blocking When They Block Social Media | Sharing online to enrich learning | Scoop.it

The real issue, of course, is not social media but learning. Specifically, the fact that our schools are disconnected from young learners and how their learning practices are evolving. The decision to block social media is inconsistent with how students use social media as a powerful node in their learning network. Can social media be a distraction in the classroom? Absolutely. Will some students access questionable content if given the opportunity? Yes. But many students use social media to enhance their learning, expand the reach of the classroom, find the things that they ‘need to know,’ and fashion their own personal learning networks.

Natali L's curator insight, May 31, 2015 3:20 AM

By blocking social media schools are also blocking the opportunity:

1)    to teach students about the inventive and powerful ways that communities around the world are using social media

2) for students and teachers to experience the educational potential of social media together

3)    for students to distribute their work with the larger world

4)    for students to reimagine their creative and civic identities in the age of networked media

Takistades sotsiaalmeedia kasutamist koolis, blokeeritakse võimalus:

1. õpetada erinevaid teid, mida kasutatakse   maailma  kogukondades sotsiaalmeedia abil

2. õpilastel ja õpetajatel koos kogeda sotsiaalmeedia hariduslikku potentsiaali

3. esitada õpilastel oma töid laiemale kuulajaskonnale

4. õpilastele ümber mõtestada nende loomingulist ja kodanikuidentiteeti digiajastul.
