A new series suggests Aborigines didn't wipe out megafauna, writes Deborah Snow.
Marc Vermeersch's insight:

A too emotional beginning of an interesting testimony on video. The religion of the aboriginals was the ancestor cult and its pendant, totemism. Forget about the even more emotional judgment about the extinction of the megafauna in Australia. Of course man was responsible, who else, mammoths? Red ochre is synonym of life and of man's (and sometimes animal's) soul.

Marc Vermeersch's insight:

A very interesting documentary about the capabilities of Homo sapiens and neanderthals to think symbolicaly. The role of red ochre in the Vlombos Cave (SA) is mentioned but it is not understood what is meant (a symbol for blood = life = the soul). A missed opportunity: red ochre was used by heidelbergensis and neanderthal (Belle Vue, Maastricht). As for art: the Venuses of Tan Tan and Berekhat Ram could have been mentioned etc. All weren mentioned in my books that appeared in 2008.
