Searching for a JOB in Architecture? 10 Things You Need to Know…

Searching for a JOB in Architecture? 10 Things You Need to Know… | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

For me, university was about finding the confidence to explore creativity, the notion of self, and determining my own measurements of expectation. Last year I wrote an article entitled “10 things you don’t get taught in architecture school,” which provided advice on how to succeed in an academic setting. Having now graduated, the following article is reflective of my first 2 years working full time in architecture.

My experience in the office so far has required another round of self-configuring: repositioning the value of free thinking, redetermining the notion of self within the larger context of someone else’s expectations, and managing my objectives with those of others. The measurement of success is no longer determined by me, but by various organisational objectives and requirements.

Essential to the journey of finding my current job, I have initiated substantial life changes that include establishing a career strategy, reevaluating how I position myself in the field of architecture, and questioning who I am as an individual and what I want to contribute to the profession.

Does the Title of “Architect” Deserve To Be Protected?

Does the Title of “Architect” Deserve To Be Protected? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
According to some, Peter Zumthor, Daniel Libeskind, and Renzo Piano should not be referred to as architects (at least in the UK), since they are not registered

In August, the AIA posted a topic on its LinkedIn discussion board entitled “Misrepresenting Oneself as an Architect on LinkedIn”. Ever since (and once again), the issue of protecting the title of “Architect” has been a hot topic, as explained in this article on Fast Company. This follows the revelation in BD last year that the Architects’ Registration Board ordered the British architectural media to cease referring to Renzo Pianoand Daniel Libeskind as Architects. With the topic appearing so frequently, and in different countries each time, Fast Company conjures images of a “raging global debate”. But what, really, is going on in the world of architecture to fuel such a debate?

The Architect’s Guide to Life in OUTER Space

The Architect’s Guide to Life in OUTER Space | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Space stations have been a part of sci-fi iconography for more than a century. Propelled by the technological innovations of the Second Industrial Revolution—including the automobile, the airplane, electrification, and modern communication systems—the idea of living in space inspired a new era of science fiction. The first manifestation of a space habitat appeared in Edward Everett Hale’s “The Brick Moon,” a short story in which a spherical satellite entirely built of bricks is inadvertently launched

[Los Angeles, California, USA] AD Classics: The Crystal Cathedral / Philip Johnson | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Crystal Cathedral was designed as a religious theater of sorts, acting as both television studio and stage to a congregation of 3,000. It was commissioned by renowned televangelist Robert Schuller and completed in 1980 near Los Angeles, California. Philip Johnson and John Burgee devised the glass enclosure in response to Schuller’s request that the church be open to the “sky and the surrounding world.”

ARCHIPIX: 8-Bit Architects (Part Two) | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Barcelona-based architect Federico Babina has released the second edition of ARCHIPIX(Less is pixel), revealing a series of 8-bit portraits of modern architecture’s most legendary masters and works. The idea behind the project is to capture the essence and personality of each subject through the simplicity of the pixel. This serves, Babina describes, as “a metaphor of architecture, where every little detail is a key component of the whole mosaic.”

- Frank Gehry - The Bilbao Guggenheim Museum. Film 23

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art, designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, and located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain.
It is built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Atlantic Coast. The Guggenheim is one of several museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The museum features permanent and visiting exhibits of works by Spanish and international artists.
One of the most admired works of contemporary architecture, the building has been hailed as a "signal moment in the architectural culture", because it represents "one of those rare moments when critics, academics, and the general public were all completely united about something. The museum was the building most frequently named as one of the most important works completed since 1980 in the 2010 World Architecture Survey among architecture experts.

Meier: Richard Meier & Partners, Complete Works 1963-2013 | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

From his early days as one of the “New York Five,” Richard Meier has been a central figure in contemporary architecture; this updated 2013 trade edition of the XL version is published in the occasion of the firm’s 50th anniversary. With the Getty Center and more recent buildings such as the Jubilee Church in Rome, Meier has established a reputation for expanded the horizons of contemporary American architecture while maintaining his rigorously rational approach to design and detailing. Known for carefully conceived grid plans and frequent use of white, Meier is a master of light, space, and volume, able to adapt his style to very different circumstances and locations.

The entire span of Meier’s career is included in this exceptional volume, newly updated for this edition and created in close collaboration with the architect, and the eminent graphic designer Massimo Vignelli. This spectacular monograph displays Meier’s work in unprecedented size and brilliance, and features a preface by the noted Spanish architect Alberto Campo Baeza.

In memoriam: Lebbeus Woods one year after his death

In memoriam: Lebbeus Woods one year after his death | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Unlike Daniel Libeskind and Zaha Hadid, who made the career transition from avant-garde upstarts to global superstars, Lebbeus Woods never got rich by building rubbish.

A little over a year ago the visionary architect Lebbeus Woods died. I never got around to writing up a reflection on his passing, something commemorating and celebrating his lifework. Thankfully, many whose opinions and insight I respect did. What follows is thus a pastiche of images by Woods and text from two articles — one by Sammy Medina (then at Architizer), with whom I’ve collaborated in the past, the other by Kelly Chan (then at ArtInfo), a fantastically overproductive architecture critic

How BIM (Building Information Modeling) is Crushing the Art from Architecture and How to Stop It | Architosh | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Architosh is thrilled to share with its readers its latest Viewpoint contribution by architects Louis Smith and Lisa Stacholy, expressing a clear vision about the importance of “Inspiration” in the age of BIM. This well constructed essay leads the reader with its most powerful reasons ahead of its main conclusion and then subtly counter punches the reader’s own response with a few deftly crafted versions of more modest projects that put to use the very theories the authors espouse

collectif d'architectes hobo paris
