New LA Subway Could Spell Acoustical Doom for Gehry’s Disney Hall

New LA Subway Could Spell Acoustical Doom for Gehry’s Disney Hall | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Architect Frank Gehry has voiced concerns that the new Los Angeles subway, scheduled for construction in two to three years, may disturb concerts in his famous Disney Hall. The planned subway line would run 125 feet below the venue’s parking garage and recent simulations have shown that the rumblings could be audible inside the concert hall. Gehry has called for the review of previous noise projections for the metro project, which two years ago predicted no audible impact on his design. “It would be a disaster for Disney Hall,” Gehry told the LA Times. “The flag is up and we should go over it and make sure.”

Massive Green Building Projects Aim to Create a Sustainable 2014 World Cup

Massive Green Building Projects Aim to Create a Sustainable 2014 World Cup | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

For the 2014 World Cup, Brazil will roll out impressive facilities that could score LEED certification and add to its rich modern architecture legacy.

Describing any massive construction project as “green” is a stretch, especially when it comes to sports facilities. But in football-mad Brazil, plans for a bevy of new and refurbished football stadia for the 2014 World Cup are well underway.

Brazil's projects could both score international green building certifications such as LEED while adding to the country’s rich modern architecture legacy. Much of the credit for Brazil’s greening of the World Cup goes to Vicente Mello and Ian McKee, two architects who drafted the CopaVerde plan, which advocates for the most responsible construction practices possible for the event’s venues...

What a building!  Everyone is getting on board with Green Buildings and LEED certifications.  Turner is also on the Green and LEED Certified train. It's the new IN thing.

Kenneth Hadden Miller's curator insight, April 26, 2015 3:56 AM

An earlier scoop showed the issues that Rio was going to have with disabled patrons who attend the 2016 Olympic Games.  This is a bit more positive as it shows the green facilities that were created or rebuilt for the 2014 World Cup.  One of these even had its own solar power plant, which is extremely impressive!

Does the COST of Architectural Education Create a Barrier to the Profession?

Does the COST of Architectural Education Create a Barrier to the Profession? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

A recent report by the UK Architectural Education Review Group has highlighted the high cost of education as a barrier which prevents less wealthy students from accessing the profession, reveals BDonline. Among a number of concerns raised about the current state of architectural education, it says that the cost to study architecture in the UK could “create an artificial barrier to the profession based solely on a student’s willingness to accept high levels of personal debt”.

Architecture has long been seen as a pastime of the wealthy, as evidenced by Philip Johnson‘s claim that “the first rule of architecture is be born rich, the second rule is, failing that, to marry wealthy”. However, the report acknowledges the fact that making the profession open to people of all backgrounds is not only a moral imperative, but will be vital to bring the best talent into the field.

[Paris] Stephane Malka: EP7 restaurant, SEMAPA | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Stephane Malka's EP7 restaurant in paris takes the typology of an open air bar to bring the forest to the urban environment.

French architect and former graffiti artist stephane malka has designed a guinguette typology for paris that synthesizes the mythical

dimensions of nature with the ceaseless growth of the urban environment. his EP7 restaurant uses an accretion of raw wood, primed for t

he organic growth of plant life, to created a lively skin for an urban recreation space. the architect began his career as artistic agent of the

urban landscape, using the massive planes of the city to understand the communicative power of the built form. the architecture, in this case,

references land art and ties in the intertwined masses of metropolitan paris with the teeming life of the forest. free walls and vegetation arise

from the delicately sectioned modules of square timber while expanses of glazing challenge the pixelated envelope.

Ricciotti, architecte : Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine - Jeudi 11 avril 2013 - Dimanche 08 septembre 2013

Ricciotti, architecte : Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine - Jeudi 11 avril 2013 - Dimanche 08 septembre 2013 | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
