Une bibliothèque vibrante faite de containers recyclés | dpavilion architects: amin shipping container library | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Surabaya-based firm dpavilion architects have recently completed a colorful library in batu made from eight recycled shipping containers that cost eight million rps (820 USD) each. They are standardized modules suitable for a variety of uses, affordable, and they symbolically hold the books that will open the children's eyes to the very world the containers have travelled before ending up as a library and polyclinic. In the small cosmopolitan agricultural town, a clash between the contemporary city and the village clash ; where the gap between the rich and poor is increasingly widening, the project aims at leveling the playing field by providing an educational facility with over 6,000 books and a small clinic all for free, in an attempt to improve the quality of life for all the locals.

L'accessibilité doit être au coeur des enjeux de développements. Un bel exemple d'intégration de la culture dans les milieux isolés ou défavorisés.

AD Classics: Tower of Winds / Toyo Ito | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Tower of Winds is a project largely indicative of Toyo Ito’s approach to architecture, particularly his belief in the importance of technology and its vital role in the future of architecture. The project not only embraces technology and involves it in a dialogue with the city, but also establishes a direct symbolic relationship between nature and the installation.

STRAWSCRAPER is an extension of Söder Torn on Södermalm in Stockholm with a new energy producing shell covered in straws that can recover wind energy. What was supposed to become a building of 40 flights became 26. Söder Torn on Södermalm in central Stockholm was finalized 1997, but the architect Henning Larsen had already left the contract after having lost influence over the design of the tower.

Are Renderings BAD for Architecture?

Are Renderings BAD for Architecture? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

At the opening of a recent article for The Guardian, Olly Wainwright finds himself observing a slew of thesis projects produced by the best and brightest students of the UK. But Wainwright is most struck – not by the display of technical skill or imagination – but by the sheer lack of connection these projects had with actual, built, imperfect architecture: “Time and again, the projects seemed intent on fleeing the real world of people and places, scale and context; retreating instead into fantasy realms of convoluted forms with no seeming purpose.”

Films & Architecture: “The Fall”

Films & Architecture: “The Fall” | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Fall is a visually very powerful film. It is the result of a tremendous effort from its director Tarsem Singh, who travelled around the world in order to find the right locations for each scene. The film includes footage shot in over 20 different countries, with places such as Taj Mahal, the Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town, or the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. In fact, the mentioned “Blue City” in the movie, is the actual Jodhpur, an old city of Rajasthan, where local people painted their houses in blue colour thinking they would prevent the heat effects.

Original title: The Fall
Year: 2006
Runtime: 117 min.
Country: India, United Kingdom, United States
Director: Tarsem Singh

Is Google Glass Going To Change Architecture Forever?

Is Google Glass Going To Change Architecture Forever? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
Is architecture ready for Google Glass? The augmented reality that Google Glass promises may not seem architectural, but in truth the two couldn’t be more related.

Via Jed Fisher

Jed Fisher's curator insight, June 5, 2013 6:56 AM

The answer is Yes :)

And it's also Yes for manufacturing in general.

Or at least Glass is a catalyst for this. It is worth noting that, as it stands now, the Glass API has no support for AR at all.

That said, it's only a matter of time, AR Glasses are coming.

If we can hook up Augmented Reality (which will require Cloud computing (or low power mobile GPU computing) for the computer visions and visualization/rendering) then there is a wealth of possibilities in not just architecture and navigation like experiences but much more - like being able to see useful information (show me what part of the building is going to be worked on tomorrow, etc).

It's also a huge enabler for manufacturing. Imagine being able to recognize your product (requires good 3D computer vision but we are getting close now, eg Google Goggles). For example, take a look at a car in the street - "oh i like that one, what options are available for it?" - Bam - i see the options, prices, and related information overlaid on the car.

The future is not only mobile, it's visual!
