What Does San Francisco’s New Apple Store Say About Commercial Architecture?

What Does San Francisco’s New Apple Store Say About Commercial Architecture? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

This past May, Apple filed plans to close its existing flagship retail store at 1 Stockton Street in San Francisco and move it three blocks north to one of the city’s most popular spots: Union Square. This plan was met with enthusiasm from city officials until they realized that Apple, and the store’s architects at Foster + Partners, were disregarding a beloved bronze folk art fountain by San Francisco sculptor Ruth Asawa that currently occupies the site. Many have also criticized the store’s design for being a characterless box of metal and glass that contributes nothing unique to the local landscape, raising awareness of a commercial architecture defined more by trademark and less by its surroundings.

Faut-il pendre Rudy Ricciotti ?

Faut-il pendre Rudy Ricciotti ? | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

‘Designing Recovery’ Competition Launched in Three Cities

‘Designing Recovery’ Competition Launched in Three Cities | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
An ideas competition launched at the Clinton Global Initiative calls for better design to reduce damage caused by natural disasters.

“This competition is not about replacing what was lost, but building back something that is better,” said AIA President Mickey Jacob, FAIA, in a statement. “Architects are uniquely qualified for this task.”

In order to be in the running for one of the $10,000 cash prizes, entries must have had input from a licensed architect. In addition to prize money, any entry that meets the competition requirements will be entered into a portfolio of house designs to be used later as a reference for sustainable and resilient design.

Designing Recovery will add to the ongoing projects already set in motion by these organizations, includingthe Frank Gehry–designed Make It Right house in New Orleans’s Lower 9th Ward and the St. Bernard Project’s efforts to link out-of-work veterans with jobs in hard-hit areas such as Rockaway, N.Y.

“Every city can learn from the successes and failures of these three cities and their response to disaster,” Eric Cesal, director of reconstruction and resiliency at Architecture for Humanity said in the release. “Designers and architects have a responsibility to do more—and to do better.”

[“Designing Recovery”] Four NGOs Launch Housing Competition to Aid Disaster Survivors

[“Designing Recovery”] Four NGOs Launch Housing Competition to Aid Disaster Survivors | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Make It Right, St. Bernard Project and Architecture for Humanity has formed a strategic partnership to launch “Designing Recovery,” an ideas competition created to aid in the rebuild of sustainable and resilient communities.

The competition will take place in three distinct settings – New Orleans (LA), Joplin (MO), and New York (NY) – where the non-profit partner organizations are already working to recover from previous disasters. The partner organizations will assemble a portfolio, or pattern book, of entries of single-family housing designs with the objective of improving the quality, diversity and resiliency of the housing in each community. The portfolios will be made public after the close of the competition in October and the houses that utilize submitted designs will be placed on Architecture for Humanity’s Open Architecture Network and Make It Right’s Laboratory, an online forum for green builders.

The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Doris Kim Sung: Metal that breathes

Modern buildings with floor-to-ceiling windows give spectacular views, but they require a lot of energy to cool. Doris Kim Sung works with thermo-bimetals, smart materials that act more like human skin, dynamically and responsively, and can shade a room from sun and self-ventilate.

[Jerusalem, Israel] SANAA Unveils Plans for New Downtown Arts & Design Campus in Jerusalem

[Jerusalem, Israel] SANAA Unveils Plans for New Downtown Arts & Design Campus in Jerusalem | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Today, SANAA (Sejima & Nishizawa and Associates) unveiled plans for a 400,000 square-foot building in Jerusalem that will form a new, interdisciplinary downtown campus for the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. The competition-winning proposal, designed by the 2010 Pritzker laureates in collaboration with Israel’s Nir -Kutz Architects, features an array of stacked horizontal slabs that react to the area’s topography and surrounding context in order to create a series of outdoor terraced viewing platforms and multi-level interior spaces where students and teachers can meet, study and display their work.

Biologist-Turned-Architect Invents “Breathing” Metal Building Skin

Biologist-Turned-Architect Invents “Breathing” Metal Building Skin | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Sung’s installation, “Bloom,” at the Materials & Applications gallery in Los Angeles, opens and closes according to environmental conditions. Photo: Brandon Shigeta

To build a smarter building, you could start with making better sensors. Or you could take a cue from biologist-turned-architect Doris Kim Sung and invent building materials that react to the environment on their own, bypassing the on/off switch entirely.

“We can’t do net-zero energy just by making mechanical systems more efficient,” Sung explained in a TED Talk earlier this year, which was released online Thursday. Instead, Sung takes our natural biological defenses as a model. “What I propose is that our building skins should be more similar to human skin, and by doing so can be much more dynamic and responsive,” said the architect, who is principal of dO|Su Studio Architecture and an assistant professor at the University of Southern California

[HLM] Projection du film Habitations Légèrement Modifiées le 27 juin 2013 film documentaire de Guillaume Meigneux | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
