AIA 2013: Citizen Architect

AIA 2013: Citizen Architect | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

“When you build a beautiful building, people love it. And the most sustainable building in the world is the one that’s loved.” – Cameron Sinclair, Co-founder of Architecture for Humanity

Cameron Sinclair is a man who sustains his passion for helping improve the world, one project at a time, by tapping into the skilled enthusiasm of like-minded architects from all over the globe. Since co-founding of his non-profit organization with Kate Stohr in 1999, Sinclair and his interdisciplinary teams of citizen architects have provided shelter for more than two million people worldwide.

Under his leadership, Architecture for Humanity’s infectious mantra has inspired thousands to join its cause every year, allowing the organization to expand at an unbelievable rate and become the exemplar of public interest design. Considering this, it is no surprise that Sinclair was selected to be the keynote speaker on day two of the 2013 AIA National Convention.

Keeping the momentum from yesterday’s inaugural speech, where TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie shared his success story of “doing well by doing good,” Sinclair urged architects to hold close the true value of their profession.

[PUNE, INDIA] Unveiled>Amanora Apartment City by MVRDV [A/N Blog]

[PUNE, INDIA] Unveiled>Amanora Apartment City by MVRDV [A/N Blog] | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

PHASE ONE OF MVRDV'S AMANORA APARTMENT CITY IN PUNE, INDIA (ALL IMAGES COURTESY MVRDV).

Like its neighbor to the northeast, India is urbanizing at break-neck speed. Much of the resulting development takes the shape of monotonous towers and slabs designed to house the maximum number people as quickly as possible. The innovative Dutch firm MVRDV’s project Amanora Apartment City punches through, twists, and slices off pieces of a monolithic superstructure, to create a new park-side landmark within a largely undifferentiated urban field.

The first of three buildings will contain 1,068 naturally-ventilated apartments ranging from studios to villa-sized units, to capture a variety of family sizes and income levels, as well as retail and community facilities. Many units will have garden balconies overlooking a park and city beyond. While the massive, mountain-like building is built of concrete, it will be richly detailed with a variety of materials, including ornamented sunshades, wood cladding on the balconies, and stone facing on passageways through the building. Taken together, the three-building complex will eventually include over 3,000 units, and their multi-peaked, zigzagging forms will create a new urban identity for the rapidly expanding city.

[Park Avenue in Manhattan] FOSTER WON, BUT CHECK OUT ZAHA HADID, REM KOOLHAAS, & RICHARD ROGERS’ NYC VISIONS

[Park Avenue in Manhattan] FOSTER WON, BUT CHECK OUT ZAHA HADID, REM KOOLHAAS, & RICHARD ROGERS’ NYC VISIONS | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Park Avenue in Manhattan is ready to grow taller, and a starchitect-filled competition won by Lord Norman Foster revealed the first of what’s likely to be many new towers along the corridor. But what of the three runners up? Renderings from all four finalist—Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers, OMA, and Norman Foster—have now been released by L&L Holdings and Lehman Brothers detailing four distinct visions for the future of the New York skyscraper.

Foster’s final winning design will be presented at the Municipal Arts Society’s Summit for New York City, which begins on Thursday, October 18 (Foster will present on Friday at 9 a.m.). Also during the two day summit, an exhibition displaying the work of all four finalists’ designs will be on view.

OMA Wins Skyscraper Competition in Stockholm

OMA Wins Skyscraper Competition in Stockholm | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

OMA has won the design competition for Tors Torn in Stockholm, beating out four competing practices for the opportunity to build the third tallest twin skyscrapers in Sweden.

Existing urban guidelines call for a gateway to the new Hagastaden area of Stockholm, and OMA’s proposal accommodates a mixed-use program with a set of “rough-skinned” towers. The protrusions and inversions at different heights produce an alternating pattern of indoor living spaces and protruding outdoor spaces. OMA explains that their design “challenges the expected uniformity and homogenous façade treatment that is often assigned to tower structures. Instead, it extends the skin to expose the individuality of the separate living units in the two blocks – a true vertical, urban agglomeration.”

[China] A stroke of genius: Jean Nouvel - FT.com

[China] A stroke of genius: Jean Nouvel - FT.com | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
To stand out in contemporary China takes scale. To get noticed alongside the Bird’s Nest Stadium built for the 2008 Olympics demands a gesture.

And to anchor a new museum district in a city where the monumental has become commonplace is going to need something remarkable.

Jean Nouvel is about to start building something that should do the job. The French architect behind the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Fondation Cartier and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris has designed the breathtakingly bold new National Art Museum of China (Namoc) for Beijing, a vast structure which combines internal complexity with apparent external simplicity.

Such simplicity, in fact, that it is all based on a single line. Nouvel quotes to me the Chinese artist Shi Tao (1642-1707): “A single line is the source of everything in existence,” and this new museum is to be based on a single brush stroke. “We started with calligraphy,” he says. “Pupils used to spend half a year just on that first line with a brush. That first line contains all of Chinese culture – painting, writing and the energy of Chi.”

Nouvel has taken that stroke and translated it into a three-dimensional structure. The brush stroke, Nouvel writes in an essay, “starts off sharp in the south; its end, in the north, is round and smooth. Its whole body is taut with the energy-breath that runs through it and lifts it in a single movement.”

[L´Aquila] “Salotto urbano” a shelter that can be opened to all sides, a café/bar, a tribune with a stage and a storage and stair unit. | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The historic centre of the city of L´Aquila was destroyed by an earthquake in April 2009. The unclear situation of the reconstructing process in many parts of the city is the reason why the centre is now – 2 years later – still hardly accessible. That situation caused great displeasure and frustration amongst the population of L´Aquila.

Therefore we suggest to reopen the city as soon and wide-ranging as possible – to present new perspectives for the inhabitants of L`Aquila and to regive them social self-control. Even if the reconstruction of the city will last for several more years, it’s necessary to develop a new planning strategy that enables the citizens to reuse and reoccupy the city step by step. We suggest starting this strategy on the city squares, because they are mostly in a good condition and accessible. Shops could be reopened there and people could begin to observe what’s happening in their city.

Completed in 1957 for industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his family in Columbus, Indiana, the Miller House and Garden embodies midcentury Modernism in it’s fullest. Architect Eero Saarinen‘s steel and glass composition has held together very well, proving the quality and use of materials to be worthy of time.

Guggenheim Announces Expansion of Frank Lloyd Wright Museum [A/N Blog]

Guggenheim Announces Expansion of Frank Lloyd Wright Museum [A/N Blog] | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

“What if we decided we needed a little more Guggenheim?” asked New York- and Athens-based group Oiio Architecture Office. In a shocking announcement on its Facebook page, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum today disclosed that it will be expanding—vertically: “We are pleased to announce that beginning today, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will begin construction to expand the original Frank Lloyd Wright design by an additional 13 floors.” The museum has always faced spatial limitations, and as the Whitney has taken to expanding over the High Line, renderings for Oiio Architecture Office show the Guggenheim rising vertically from its Fifth Avenue site, continuing the building’s signature spiral form. While this expansion is sure to garner criticism from preservationists, as the buildings is currently listed with both the National Register of Historic Places and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, representatives from the museum have stated that the proposed addition will respond respectfully Wright’s original design.

[Jerusalem, Israel] Foster + Partners-designed Einstein Museum

[Jerusalem, Israel] Foster + Partners-designed Einstein Museum | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Foster + Partners has released concept renderings for the proposed Albert Einstein Museum in Jerusalem. Part of Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus Campus, the museum will serve as a motivational learning center that reflects Einstein’s scientific and cultural impact on the world. The design concept is open and airy and emphasizes light at every bend, including an amphitheater covered in mirrors to illuminate the space. The idea behind the Museum is to “shine a light” on Einstein’s accomplishments.

Foster’s design accentuates light through the use of a spherical volume at the core of the structure that functions as an amphitheater. The gallery incorporates gyroscopic mirrors that rotate and bounce sunlight onto a dark screen, which creates shows to produce the effect of a star shining above the building. The mirrored surfaces form a canopy over the exhibition courtyard.
