[Barcelona, España] Josep LLuís Sert > Les Escales Park. 1967 - HIC Arquitectura » | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

MoMA’s Le Corbusier Exhibit is MUST-SEE, Says Critic Alexandra Lange

MoMA’s Le Corbusier Exhibit is MUST-SEE, Says Critic Alexandra Lange | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Although critiquing the exhibit for some “critical flaws” – namely the choice of theme and the lack of explanatory text – Alexandra Lange’s review for The New Yorker praises the MoMA’s Le Corbusier exhibit, “An Atlas of Modern Landscapes,” as a “must-see” thanks to its varied displays, which show “the terrific span of Le Corbusier’s career in time, space, and scale [...] If current architects take anything from the exhibition [...]  it should be the power of those big, gestural drawings, where visual and verbal argument vividly come together.”

LE CORBUSIER, EL ESPACIO INEFABLE | TECNNE

LE CORBUSIER, EL ESPACIO INEFABLE | TECNNE | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Shanghai Tower: Gensler’s Savvy City In The Sky

Shanghai Tower: Gensler’s Savvy City In The Sky | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
The Shanghai Tower reached its full height of 634 meters, with the topping-out ceremony held in skies over the Pudong Financial District on Saturday.

With our newest edition of Design Update, we celebrate the anticipated topping out of China’s tallest building — Shanghai Tower. Set for completion in 2014, the tower is reshaping the way we build and inhabit cities. It features innovative technologies and breaks new ground by drawing community life high up into its dramatic sky lobbies.

Inspired by Shanghai’s tradition of parks and neighborhoods, the 632-meter-high (2,073-foot) mixed-use building completes the world’s first super-highrise precinct. Its tapered, spiral form is a research-based response to high winds in the region, while creating a new icon for this capital of commerce.

Architects: STOP With The Regionalist Cliches When Designing For The Middle East!

Architects: STOP With The Regionalist Cliches When Designing For The Middle East! | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

The Middle East in recent years has been transformed by what might be the largest collection of top-of-the-line contemporary architecture in the world—particularly those nations lucky enough to have found oil beneath their sands. Starchitects and young practices alike have benefited from the flow of black gold and its accompanying license to design freely. Sleepy towns have been transformed into skyscraper cities in the space of a couple decades, while major new cultural institutions set up shop.

Though many of these new buildings are exciting, innovative, sustainable, and awe-inspiring, for whatever reason, whether because of the lack of existing context or a pesky contextuality clause in a competition brief, their architects feel the need to resort to cliched references in order to assure clients and future inhabitants that the buildings relate to their sites.

Many of these references are to natural phenomena: the wind-blown sand dunes of the desert or the sanctuary of an oasis; others refer to a way of life seemingly passing beyond recall: the dhows used for trade and pearl diving, or the tents of the nomadic Bedouins. These are, in fact, inspirational images, but they are also two-dimensional, as if the entire essence of a place and culture can be boiled down to a single formal metaphor, and they also become tired when repeated by a firm, much less five of them.

The thing is, so much of the fabric of these gulf cities is new that it forms its own context. When so many prestigious and formally adventurous buildings are placed side by side, they start to become a new vernacular, a coherent gestalt. These amazing contemporary buildings are strong enough on their own—and when read together as a group—that these one-line paeans to regionalism and contextuality are perhaps not even necessary.

Here are a few of these contextual metaphors, gathered and synched.

La maquette numérique RÉVOLUTIONNE l'architecture - Techniques de l'Ingénieur | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it

Best cultural documentary I ever seen - "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman"

Best cultural documentary I ever seen - "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman" | The Architecture of the City | Scoop.it
EDIT ON TRAILER.php Copyright J. Paul Getty Trust. Used with permission. Julius Shulman Photography Archive, Research Library at the Getty Research

DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS

Photo: Will Paice

I consider Julius Shulman my mentor and my friend. Few people have had such a profound impact on my life as he. Two things were apparent to me upon my initial meeting with Julius in the spring of 1999. First, the photography created by the man is nothing short of astounding and second, Julius himself is as equally impressive as the work he created.

The true defining characteristic of a Shulman photograph is that vibrant, uplifting, profound energy that transcends the two-dimensional space. When viewing one of Julius’ “constructed views” I am reminded of the potential for greatness inherent within each individual. I am then usually driven to a state of bewilderment knowing that within the Shulman archive are 8000+ projects dating back to 1927 when Julius started photographing with a Brownie Box Camera.

The photography however is only half the story; Julius himself is the other. Distilled to its barest essence it is this: Julius Shulman is a humanist. His genuine love for people, culture and the arts preserves my 98 year old friend as an eternal youth.

The above compelled me to create a documentary film on Julius Shulman and Modernism. It is an honor and privilege to work on a project possessing such depth and distinction; I do so with the utmost passion, determination and humble appreciation. It is my hope to have created a cinematic experience that successfully impacts and inspires as many people as it can possibly reach.
