Initiatives that support free or very low-cost transportation meet with great resistance initially. Many fear not just that the system will see increased usage by homeless people, as the article mentioned, but that poor people will have unprecedented access to wealthier areas, increasing crime in these exclusive communities. After a year or two, these myths are usually debunked as poor individuals utilize the transportation system predominately to access job interviews and opportunities.
