Trump Administration Eyes Steep Fee Hikes At America's Busiest National Parks

Trump Administration Eyes Steep Fee Hikes At America's Busiest National Parks | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Entrance charges into parks including Yellowstone and Denali would more than double.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Sadly, the country is outgrowing its national parks. Too many visitors and too little maintenance lead to a less and less satisfying experience and the deterioration of these national treasures. Perhaps we need to use a tiered entry system, but does that mean we place a smaller value on allowing our citizens to appreciate these wonderful places than we do on how wealthy those visitors are? If we are going to restrict use, it shouldn't be on the basis of affordability but perhaps on some other characteristics such as willingness to actually hike rather than just drive through or history of helping the environment.

In the meantime, there is no question that we need to keep investing in the care of these great places, both those with historical and those with natural importance. It certainly seems to me that the US government wastes more than the amount of money that would be required, so yes not using private planes for government travel is one way to help meet this expense.

Perhaps we should also be adding to our national parks, creating new ones that offer nature, beauty, history, and the delight of travel. We may not have more glaciers and geysers, but we certainly have lots of wonderful places to visit.

Have you been to many of the National Parks? I've been to about a dozen or more and wish I'd made it to more.

The $10 Lifetime National Park Pass for Seniors Is About to Get a Lot More Expensive

The $10 Lifetime National Park Pass for Seniors Is About to Get a Lot More Expensive | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The National Park Service announced its lifetime senior park pass will increase from $10 to $80 in August
Kenneth Weene's insight:
We had one, but it was lost in an accident so we got another. One of the great deals for older Americans. I hate to see the price go up, but can understand the need. Still an 800% increase seems a bit excessive. Sadly, the government is no longer about serving the people. Too busy protecting and serving the rich. At any rate, do take time to see the wonderful national parks and other sites.

Canadian woman denied entry to U.S. says she feels 'targeted'

Canadian woman denied entry to U.S. says she feels 'targeted' | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A Canadian woman from Montreal who was travelling on a Canadian passport says she was turned away at the U.S. border and told she needed an immigrant visa to enter the country. She claims a border agent told her: "'I know you may feel like you've been Trumped.'"
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If we were to investigate the border agent involved, I bet we'd find something rather interesting about him, not so much the one who stopped her the second time but the one who stopped her the first time and obviously set this ridiculous chain off. You have to wonder what he put into her file. I'll bet it wasn't a statement that there had been no reason to stop her and that she was a cooperative Canadian citizen. Oh well, we don't need the friendship of India, the world's largest democracy and a growing economic power, or of Canada, our neighbor and big trading partner. Nope, we're just fine on our own...NOT! And, note, this started for this lady before Trump. We're talking the biases of Americans who forget that we are a nation of diversity. Did you know that tourism is down over 6% since Trump took office?

Tolls can hold surprise charges for rental-car drivers. Here’s what to know.

Tolls can hold surprise charges for rental-car drivers. Here’s what to know. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Taking a bridge, tunnel or toll road in your rental car may bring unexpected fees.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Since we don't have tolls here in Phoenix, I hadn't thought about them for years. I guess the moral to this story is in a world dominated by corporations, drivers beware. Someday, we won't get rental cars to drive but rental self-driving cars; I wonder if they'll be programmed to rack up all the charges they can. Well, not really wonder. Let's be honest, of course they'll be because corporations have no consciences.

This Is Why Pooping Is A Disaster When You Travel

This Is Why Pooping Is A Disaster When You Travel | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Pooping? No way! You're on vacation, and so is your butt.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Well worth reading if you are planning on traveling. One added tip from me: Bring and use antiseptic hand-wipes. That extra care about getting your hands contaminated when using bathrooms is often justified, especially in places lacking in modern cleaning products.

12 Jobs That Let You See the World for Free | Upsetment | Scoop.it
This comprehensive list can help you find a job that let you travel the world for free.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
There's nothing new on this list, but I enjoyed thinking about the possibilities. I didn't enjoy the regret that I hadn't thought of doing something that would have taken me around the world when I was younger. Now, looking back I wish I had been a _____________. Nope, I'm not going to tell you. Instead, you tell me, which of these great ways to travel and see the world speaks to you?

8 Unusual Sinking Places - ODDEE

8 Unusual Sinking Places - ODDEE | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Either shoddy workmanship or soft earth caused these eight areas to tilt over time.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Interesting that this list, which does in fact include the Taj Mahal, didn't include the buildings in Alphabet City New York that are slowly sinking into the muck below. Of course, far fewer of those buildings were put up because of the hero of my novel, Times to Try the Soul of Man, which is based on real people and real events. https://www.amazon.com/Times-Try-Soul-Kenneth-Weene-ebook/dp/B00VYSQ1VO/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
