This Is What Nuclear Weapons Leave in Their Wake

This Is What Nuclear Weapons Leave in Their Wake | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A remote area of Kazakhstan was once home to nearly a quarter of the world’s nuclear testing. The impact on its inhabitants has been devastating.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
With two foolish leaders, one in North Korea and the other in Washington, talking about building more nuclear weapons, it's important to remember just how horrible those bombs can be. Is it that humans forget too easily or that we find a few leaders who just don't care what happens to other people? Assuredly we must all work together to end such weapons or our children will suffer their use.

North Korea's Nuclear Weapons Not Reason Enough for War

North Korea's Nuclear Weapons Not Reason Enough for War | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Trump said that he operates under the assumption that Kim Jong Un is “rational.” But is he willing to bet nuclear apocalypse on that?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The problem with North Korea isn't that Kim wants to start a war. The problem is that he wants to sell those weapons and thereby obtain the unlimited wealth that is his personal desire. Terrorists, emerging states, and armies engaged in civil wars are all looking for the big edge. Be it better missiles or dirty bombs, they really don't care as long as it gives them the win. And, sitting in Pyongyang is an arsenal that every want-to-be potentate creams for and every rational government fears. The real question is how to get China to join in the task of bringing Pyongyang to heel. Saber rattling is not going to help. This is a job for realpolitik. We need a Kissinger, a Bismarck, or a Metternich, somebody who actually sees the chessboard of diplomacy for what it is and not what they want it to be.

Revealed: the £1bn of weapons flowing from Europe to Middle East

Revealed: the £1bn of weapons flowing from Europe to Middle East | Upsetment | Scoop.it
AK-47s, machine guns, explosives and more travel along new arms pipeline from Balkans to countries known to supply Syria
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Is anybody surprised that there is a flow of weapons to all sides of every conflict in the Middle East? There are arms dealers waiting to make a buck everywhere. That the countries of Eastern Europe want to get their share of the business shouldn't surprise us any more than the fact that the United States is the biggest arms dealer of all. That countries like Saudi Arabia support their surrogates on the battle fields shouldn't surprise us either. Once again, the US has more surrogates than anyone. Everyone says they want peace, but there are dollars to be made in war. Everyone says they believe in peace, but their are resources to control. Everyone says "Peace be with you," but there are jealous gods to be served. Meanwhile, all over the region—and through out the world—Mars is the only god who seems to matter.

Military Prodigy: Russia Develops Advanced Light Tactical Robot

Military Prodigy: Russia Develops Advanced Light Tactical Robot | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Russian weapon manufacturer KB Integrated Systems (KBIS) has developed a combat robot, which, due to its size, can easily fit into a backpack.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And when this gets into the hands of a terrorist or inspires an angry teenager with great tech skills, we will have true carnage at a local level. Can humankind ever figure out that making war should not be about getting more fearsome weapons but about deciding that war is inherently a bad idea that needs to be ended? For Americans, would owning such drones be legal under the Second Amendment?

Feinstein To Introduce Assault Weapon Ban

Feinstein To Introduce Assault Weapon Ban | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said that she will introduce an assault weapons ban in the Senate on the first day of the next Congress in January, during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I do not think that guns are the essential problem, I do think it a good move to ban some of the extreme weapons and ammo systems that certainly exacerbate our nation's bent for violence.

Trump wanted dramatic increase in nuclear arsenal in military meeting

Trump wanted dramatic increase in nuclear arsenal in military meeting | Upsetment | Scoop.it
President Trump said he wanted what amounted to a nearly tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal in a meeting with military leaders this summer.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What we don't need is a POTUS determined to add more nuclear weapons to the world's supply. Of course, that's predicated on the POTUS being able to understand the goals of government and that those goals do not include the Apocalypse. This is just one more indicator to me that Mr. Trump is being led by the Reconstuctionist and Dispensationalist Christians, groups that are hoping for the end of the age of man and ushering in the New Kingdom.

For me, this is a time to be scared, very scared. I see the influence of such "thinking" and I wonder how long before this nascent theocracy of Amerika will actually bring the world to the brink. Can the more rational and informed heads keep us safe? Can they keep the idiocy and moronic among us under control? We can only hope and if you wish pray.

US Army gets world record-setting 60-kW laser

US Army gets world record-setting 60-kW laser | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The U.S. Army is taking delivery of a 60 kilowatt-class laser from Lockheed Martin as the company wraps up demonstrations of the capability.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While Russia is cutting her defense budget, the US military gets stronger and stronger. Of course, to hear the GOP talk about it we need new weapons because Mr. Obama allowed our military to go unfunded. So here's a nice laser to cut through that crap. Do we need more and better weapons? Possibly, but mostly what we and the rest of the world needs is more peace. How soon will it be that the Military-Espionage-Industrial complex will insist that we have to deploy these "death-ray" trucks which means we'll need a war to use them in. Someplace with good terrain for vehicles and not too much cover. I can see deployment in much of the Middle East or perhaps Iran. Yep, got to use our toys. Let's see how that goes.

China To Launch The World's Most Powerful Hyperspectral Satellite

China To Launch The World's Most Powerful Hyperspectral Satellite | Upsetment | Scoop.it
China's space hyperspectral imaging is an eye in space that you can't hide from, not as stealth, underwater or underground.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What we need is more ways to search for peace not more ways to use technology for war.

Building a Better Bullet

Building a Better Bullet | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Pentagon wants the capability for its snipers, making their goal of "one shot, one kill" even more likely
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What are the philosophical implications of making weapons not only more deadly but less personal? Guided missiles, drones, no targeted bullets: will such changes make war less acceptable to us all or just deadlier and more terrifying? And, when it becomes terrifying enough, will the alternative become mass suicide as those who are less-well armed throw themselves into the final battle? I shudder to think of these questions.
