Over 125 People hurt in New York cosmetics factory explosions, Factory had 9 safety violations  | Upsetment | Scoop.it

NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (AP) — As the number of people reporting injuries from deadly explosions at a cosmetics factory jumped to more than 125, investigators on Tuesday tried to determ
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Clearly, job site safety rules can't always be followed or successfully enforced. However, when there are repeat offenders like this factory and then workers are injured, the consequences should be much greater. One could make a case that the liquidation of such a company might be considered just as the execution or at least life imprisonment of a perpetrator who has killed and injured so many would be considered.

Yes, the goal of corporations is to protect owners from liability, but that shouldn't extend to then protecting the companies themselves on the grounds that taking away their assets would hurt the stock holders.

The Most Dangerous Jobs in 2015

The Most Dangerous Jobs in 2015 | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The most dangerous jobs in the U.S. belong to lumber workers, fishers and pilots according to updated data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Interestingly, while refuse collectors have high risk jobs, police are lower on the list and firefighters don't make the top group at all. Maybe it's time to rethink what creates risk and how to protect workers in all professions.

Community remembers slain Fulton County police officer

Community remembers slain Fulton County police officer | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Police continue to investigate what sparked a shooting in south Fulton County that killed veteran officer.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A fine police officer is dead, lost to the senseless violence of a man who should not have had guns in his possession, a man who had repeated issues with anger, violence, and guns, a man who suffered from PTSD from military service, and a man whose guns should have been confiscated. But the NRA says guns don't kill people so everybody should be allowed to have guns. To me that's like saying that since cars don't cause accidents every drunk should be allowed to drive. Let's protect our good police by taking away the weapons of those people who should not have them.

If it can save even one life, let's get the word out.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you have a teenager in your home, make sure they see this. If you text and drive, please watch this. Most importantly remember, "If you're texting, you're not driving #justdrive"

Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Nicotine for E-Cigarettes

Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Nicotine for E-Cigarettes | Upsetment | Scoop.it
“E-liquids” used to refill e-cigarettes are potent, unregulated neurotoxins. Evidence of the potential dangers is already emerging.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While this is a valid concern -- nicotine is a dangerous substance -- I have to wonder how much of sudden concern is the result of the cigarette industry's concern for their profits versus real public health worries. Yes, we need to make sure that users (and vendors) of e-cigarettes understand the issue and that manufacturers know that their workers must be protected, but let's not start attacking what may be a good technology. And why compare this to coffee when we could us alcohol, a common substance that is widely used, abused, and dangerous to children, as the simile. Perhaps that tells us something about the motivation for the attack.
(No, I am not a smoker or e-cigarette user.)

EU report on weedkiller safety copied text from Monsanto study

EU report on weedkiller safety copied text from Monsanto study | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Exclusive: EU’s food safety watchdog recommended that glyphosate was safe but pages of report were identical to application from pesticide maker
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I'm not a biochemist and can't speak to the safety of glyphosphate, but I am an observer of the world and I do know that such reliance of government on industry is definitely unsafe. More and more agencies all around the world are enthralled by and in bed with the industries they are supposed to be regulating. Regulation exists to protect us from the propensity of companies to put profit ahead of the common weal. Shame on the EU agency for simply cutting and pasting the company's findings and let's give a loud cheer for The Guardian, which did what a free press is supposed to do, watch out for and report what is actually going down.

How one easy adjustment called the Dutch Reach could save bikers' lives. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
See how this simple move could prevent countless accidents.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
It really is simple. When you stop driving, use your hand closest to the curb to open the door, forcing you to look back before opening that door. (In America that's the right hand; in Britain the left.) It might also save you from having your door slammed by a passing car.

Officer shoots boy holding fake gun at rec center

Officer shoots boy holding fake gun at rec center | Upsetment | Scoop.it
CLEVELAND (AP) — Police say a 12-year-old boy brandishing what turned out to be a fake gun at a Cleveland recreation center was shot and wounded by a responding officer.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What a tragic story. Note the last line. If you have a kid who likes toy guns, make sure those orange tips are in place. I feel for the family, but I also feel for the police officer who must have had one awful moment making that decision.

Feds equip school police agencies with military gear

Feds equip school police agencies with military gear | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Law enforcement agencies affiliated with school districts have received military surplus equipment, in some cases rifles and other weapons, through the Department of Defense 1033 program.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If the 9/11 hijackers wanted to attack America's basic freedom, they could have no better ally than our Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. Sure we have some disturbed youngsters with guns and we need to have appropriate law enforcement to deal with them. Sure we have some drug gangs and we need to have appropriate law enforcement to deal with them, too. But, sadly the process has gone way past appropriate. I would try to dissuade my daughter or son from attending any school that saw itself in need of this kind of equipment. I certainly wouldn't want to live in such a school district or near such a college.
