Joshua, one boy's effect on my thinking about abortion

Joshua, one boy's effect on my thinking about abortion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
After almost 50 years I choose to share a profound experience.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
For some time, I've been working on an essay about abortion. I hope you'll take the time to read it. The link is:

http://www.kennethweene.com/joshua ;

Yes, it is a true story, one that it has taken almost fifty years for me to share. Why? Because of the profound effect it had on my soul. If, however, you have read Memoirs From the Asylum, you have seen it reflected there.

Alabama lawyers say a 12-year-old rape victim shouldn’t be allowed to have an abortion

Alabama lawyers say a 12-year-old rape victim shouldn’t be allowed to have an abortion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Conservative attorneys argue that the 12-year-old is not "mature enough" to make a decision about life and death
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Some stories just disgust me. Here's one of them. These two "conservative attorneys" should rot in hell. They would in effect rape this child a second time by taking away her right to make this decision about her own life and body. There is something sick about those who would save the unborn child but have so little regard for the child who is already living.

Indian court allows 10-year-old rape victim to have an abortion

Indian court allows 10-year-old rape victim to have an abortion | Upsetment | Scoop.it

India registers an average of 6 rapes a day. This girl had crossed 20-week legal limit after which terminations are usually only allowed if there is danger to life of mother or baby.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
We hear so much of the way in which Muslims mistreat women, but sadly abuse is not limited to followers of Muhammad. Take India, where the Hindu population has a horrendous record on rape. So, here we have in this one case a microcosm of moral decisions. Should this 10 year old girl be forced to carry her child to term? And if she does, what would happen to the child? Who would take care of either the young mother or the baby? Then there is the plea of the girl's own mother that the rapist, the stepfather, be freed from jail because who will take care of her and the children, presumably including this 10 year old victim. Finally, let us consider the worst—for me—insight in the story. No matter what else happens, this child of ten's life is ruined. Such disgust, such sorrow, such a sense of helplessness. Sometimes the depravity and misery of humanity overwhelms.

Clinics for World’s Vulnerable Brace for Trump’s Anti-Abortion Cuts

Clinics for World’s Vulnerable Brace for Trump’s Anti-Abortion Cuts | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Health workers say President Trump’s ban on abortion counseling will hurt even those health services that do not involve abortions.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Just one more reason I supported the Women's March. This administration is already proving deadly to women, especially those in the most vulnerable places on earth. I cannot help but wonder how many of the women who support such draconian anti-abortion moves have thought about the women or the children who will suffer as a result. The best way to reduce abortions is to provide good sex education, free contraceptive services, and good pre- and perinatal care. Instead, this is the kind of stupidity that drives women to resort to unsafe abortions and infanticide. Is that really the direction in which the US wants to lead the poorer countries of the world?

Have you had an abortion? Missouri Republicans want to know. Planned Parenthood official could be arrested for not turning over names

Have you had an abortion? Missouri Republicans want to know. Planned Parenthood official could be arrested for not turning over names | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Missouri GOP wants a list of women who've had abortions in the state and is using the threat of jail to get it
Kenneth Weene's insight:
One clear reason that the GOP, and especially its religious right wing, has to be removed from any office and authority. They have no respect for privacy or for women. In what possible way is a list of patients the proper concern of government.

Sylvia Zhao's curator insight, September 25, 2016 5:28 PM
This article describes the fact that anti-choice activists are trying to turn the CEO of Planned Parenthood in court. Women who had abortions are being turned out. Pro-life is the Republican opinion of abortion, even I agree with it partly, I do not like the way they are acting against it. People in America has the right to chose. Specially under some accident, women do not want to keep the kid. Rather than not treating the infant well after birth, abortion is a better choice.

Pregnancy Clinics Fight for Right to Deny Abortion Information

Pregnancy Clinics Fight for Right to Deny Abortion Information | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Crisis pregnancy centers in California are in a battle with the state over a new law requiring them to post a notice that free or low-cost abortion care is available.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Would the opponents of this law support the right of clinics that do offer abortions to offer no information about alternatives such as adoption or to discuss supportive services for new borns available from many religious groups? I think not and therein lies my support for this law. The rational way to prevent abortions is not by making them illegal or lying about them but by providing better sex education and less expensive, efficacious contraceptives.

Pro-Lifers Harass Women After Abortions

Pro-Lifers Harass Women After Abortions | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Anti-abortion groups are now masquerading as post-abortion care services, and peddling medical lies about the procedure.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Evil done in the name of god or a religious belief is still evil. In my opinion there are many evil people in the anti-abortion crowd.

In Arizona, a Textbook Fuels a Broader Dispute Over Sex Education

In Arizona, a Textbook Fuels a Broader Dispute Over Sex Education | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The board in Gilbert, Ariz., said two pages in a biology textbook that discuss sexually transmitted diseases and contraception violated a state law passed in 2012.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Boy, do I resent those who want to force their religious agendas on the rest of us. That is a sin to me. So I want the history books to redact all mention of those who oppose abortion and those who oppose a woman's right to choose. Seems like the same logic as these idiots wanting to censor science books. Meanwhile, I keep wanting to know how many of these religious extremists supported wars, how many oppose foreign aid, and how many are against taxes to provide welfare. In my opinion, Jesus will have a special place for them — in the hell of continuous judgement. And no, I don't like abortions; nobody does. Of course if we deny good science and sex education to our children, we are going to have more unwanted and dangerous pregnancies, but do these self-righteous idiots really care about that?

How can it be wrong if Ted Cruz says it? Besides being a chronic liar, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Is this the face of the GOP? If it is, then I suggest that the Republican Party is mooning us all.

Leeches, Lye and Spanish Fly

Leeches, Lye and Spanish Fly | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Desperate to end pregnancies, women have endured agony.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I cannot imagine that any woman is pro-abortion, that wants to get pregnant in order to have an abortion. No, it is rather that women who have become pregnant are desperate to terminate what they believe will destroy that for which they live. This piece discusses what the cost of that desperation has looked like historically. If you care about women, you will read this and care about protecting the right to choose even if you wish that no woman would ever need to choose an abortion.

Kentucky trial could make state first in U.S. with no abortion clinic

Kentucky trial could make state first in U.S. with no abortion clinic | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kentucky's "unapologetically pro-life" governor and the state's last abortion clinic will square off on Wednesday in a federal courtroom in a case that could make it the first U.S. state without an abortion provider.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I keep wondering when a child who is condemned by such policies to a life of suffering will sue the state for cruel and unusual punishment. Obviously, that child won't sue personally, but their guardians could do so in their name. Consider the child born with minimal cognitive capacity who will be doomed to live in an institution or the one whose physical disabilities will limit them to a life of constant pain and minimal accomplishment. Does the state that so condemns them not have culpability when the parent tried to protect them from such horror?

And if such a suit were blocked on the state level by the doctrine of sovereign immunity, would it not then be federal given the US constitution and then perhaps set for the International Court, which of course the US doesn't accept but which might still condemn us and put sanctions on us for such inhuman decisions. I know, I speak hyperbole, but perhaps the day will come when the universe will hold the rights of a potential child to decent treatment to be greater than the political beliefs of the American right.

Besides that, let's look at the statistics. Kentucky is already well below the average state for the well-being of children with a quarter of the state's children living in poverty. Now, where are they going to come up with the funds to take care of any additional kids requiring massive care?

So, for my part, I think that states that push to abolish abortion are doing something horribly wrong. Moreover, by the very nature of the problems I've mentioned above, they are raising costs which are often then passed to the rest of the country through programs like health care and nutrition. Which brings up another question: Should the federal government penalize states that have higher rates of children born with such issues by cutting their federal funds rather than increasing them. Did you know that Kentucky is one of the states that are most heavily dependent on the federal government.

Trump Administration Moves To Roll Back Birth Control Coverage

Trump Administration Moves To Roll Back Birth Control Coverage | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Nancy Pelosi called the draft of a new rule "sickening."
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Under the guise of opposing abortion, the current administration is moving to end a program that has actually helped prevent unwanted pregnancies. The far right sees women not as man's equal but as fields to be plowed and from which will spring forth the fruit of male seeds. And, if you think that's what the Bible calls for, you really don't get the wonder of nature at all. I don't often stand too close to Nancy Pelosi, but this is indeed sickening.

Oklahoma lawmakers debate bill requiring men's permission for abortion (+video)

Oklahoma lawmakers debate bill requiring men's permission for abortion (+video) | Upsetment | Scoop.it
HB 1441 would require a woman seeking an abortion to obtain written permission from her sexual partner.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
And exactly what responsibilities will the man have if the child is born? Will he have to notify sexual partners that he has had a child "against the wishes of the woman"? Will he be required to provide for the child materially and also emotionally? If we equate the sperm not just with the egg but the entire gestational, birthing, and raising contribution of the mother, then we surely had best punish any many who wastes something so valuable. Or, we could perhaps start respect the fact that women should control their own lives even if some women may make decisions we wish they didn't.

Oklahoma Passes Bill That Would Subject Abortion Doctors to Felony Charges

Oklahoma Passes Bill That Would Subject Abortion Doctors to Felony Charges | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The State Senate measure, the first of its kind, would revoke such doctors’ medical licenses. The bill is on the desk of Gov. Mary Fallin.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While I understand that there are many who consider all abortion a sin, taking time to pass bills like this that can only reduce the healthcare of women in Oklahoma and lead to expensive and usually failed court cases for the state government is an exercise in stupidity. If it is suppose to divert the attention of voters from the more important issues that face the state, such as the dangers of fracking and climate change, we can only hope that the "Sooners" will have better sense and will recognize that it is time to change their state's political complexion from red to purple.

Brazilian Legislators Look to Increase Abortion Penalties in the Wake of Zika Outbreak

Brazilian Legislators Look to Increase Abortion Penalties in the Wake of Zika Outbreak | Upsetment | Scoop.it
While critics at the UN have called on Brazil to liberalize abortion laws because of Zika, some in the government want to toughen them
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We have here choices between two evils—abortion is not a good thing but neither is the birth of s microcephalic child. For the poor, the problem is only magnified; isn't that always the way? What do you think? If the mother knows from ultrasound or other testing that an infant will be born with such a horrible disability and with such unmeetable needs, should she have the option of abortion? If not, how should society prepare for such infants, especially if there is an epidemic of them? I invite your views.

Why I Donated Fetal Tissue After My Later Abortion

Why I Donated Fetal Tissue After My Later Abortion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
I was able to turn my pain into something that could benefit someone else
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The old saying is "Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater." In this case the baby is not a fetus but the right of women to make intelligent decisions about pregnancy. Mrs. Lyon has courageously shared her painful story to remind us how horrible the consequences of again criminalizing abortion will be. The fetus she and her husband aborted would have had a horrible life, her care would have sapped their marriage and probably stopped them from having their son, who is obviously a joy, As for the research to which they provided tissue, we can only hope that it will bear fruit in preventing suffering by others. Abortion should not be used as casual birth control, but it has a real benefit to many.

California Lawmaker: Abortion, Liberal Politicians May Have Caused Drought

California Lawmaker: Abortion, Liberal Politicians May Have Caused Drought | Upsetment | Scoop.it
If Californians would like to see an end to the extreme drought the state is facing, they should consider passing more restrictions on abortion. That, at least, was the suggestion of a California assemblywomen in remarks to anti-abortion activists last week.

"Texas was in a long period of drought until Governor Perry signed the fetal pain bill,” state Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) said, as reported by RH Reality Check. "It rained that night. Now God has His hold on California."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Another dodo emerges from the right. How sad it is that idiots like this get elected to legislatures where they can waste potentially productive time trying to grandstand to their looney constituency. Her supporters already know that she is rabid on abortion; doesn't the California legislature have something better to discuss, like designating a state gargoyle.

Pope Francis Visits 'Cemetery For Abortion Victims' in South Korea

Pope Francis Visits 'Cemetery For Abortion Victims' in South Korea | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It's a strong anti-abortion gesture
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I visited the U.S. military cemeteries in Belgium; they are much bigger, the crosses and stars much more substantial, but the existence of those fields of death do not deter us from making war. This maudlin gesture will not stop a single abortion. What stops abortion? Better sex education, better availability of contraception, clearer support of the sexual rights of women and especially their right to say no, and the best possible role-modeling from the community about how to be sexually responsible adults.

Anti-Abortion Michigan Republicans push for transvaginal ultrasound bill | Upsetment | Scoop.it
‘War on Women II’? Just months after the abortion issue turned out to be a vote-loser for the GOP, some state Republicans are trying to put the issue back on the political radar.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If I were a woman and married to or going with a Republican, I would tell him to sleep in the den until he quit the damn party. How can any women support this violation of another? The worst thing is that IMHO the Repigs have become the party of rape; pure and simple this is nothing but a form of forcing the woman into a sexual behavior.
