I emerged from the metro at Montparnasse Bienvenue to a grey & cloudy sky. People passed me as I walked slowly, looking around me. I wasn’t sure what direction I was suppose to go and for some reason was embarrassed to take out my map. Why was I embarrassed to look at my map? I’m not sure what I was expected to happen when I arrived in Paris. I guess I wanted this feeling out guilt to be taken from me. From the moment the plane left the runway I had regretted leaving my father behind by himself. In my notepad I had scribbled the address of the hostel. I approached an elderly gentleman sitting outside a shop pointing at my scrawled handwriting. He looked through me and pointed down a narrow street, blurting out directions in a harsh French accent. He had done this a million times before and he didn’t care that I didn’t understand a word of what he had just said. I didn’t feel like I was in Paris as I wandered its streets, there wasn’t a berri insight. Finally I gave in and took out my map. I was only 5 minutes from my hostel and could have been there a long time ago.

Paris is the most visited city in the world with over 15 million tourists visiting each year. A few years ago, I was one of those tourists. But those 4 short days was not enough for me. When I finished school, I decided to move to Paris for 4 months to study French. In only a few weeks I will move back to Oslo. Oslo will always be my home, but to be as cliché-like as the city it self, Paris will always have a special place in my heart.
