COM 440 (Week 3) Individual Assignment / Invasion of Privacy and Libel Case Study

Prepare a 1,400- to 1,700-word response to the questions that follow this case study.
Steve recently joined a church. Church doctrine required that members reveal any personal indiscretions to the leaders of the church. Steve disclosed some of his personal indiscretions to the leaders of the church. After his disclosures, these leaders informed Steve that they intended to tell other members of the church about his indiscretions because they thought the church leaders might help him overcome his problems. Steve was dismayed that this personal information might be disclosed. He told the church leaders about his intention to leave the church rather than have his problems disclosed. The church leaders informed him that their next step was to tell the members of the church, his neighbors, and his employer about his problems.
This case study is an example of the balance between First Amendment rights and freedom of religion. Based on this case study, examine Steve’s rights in terms of libel and the invasion of privacy torts by addressing the following issues and questions.
Which of the four privacy torts are involved with regard to this case? Is this a case of libel?
Does the expectation of privacy apply to the facts in the case?
Discuss the defenses to the tort of libel and the privacy torts regarding Steve’s lawsuit.
Is there a legal difference in disclosing personal indiscretions to church elders, to members of the church, or to members of the public?
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

COM 450 Week 1 Individual Assignment Ethical Decision-Making Model Paper

Resources: Introduction “Ethical Foundations and Perspectives” of Media Ethics and the “Ethics: What Is Right?” video located under the Week One Electronic Reserve Readings

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that addresses the following:

Explain what role ethics plays in communications.

Summarize three or more of the ethical decision-making models presented in the introduction of Media Ethics. The models presented include the following:

1A: Aristotle’s Mean

1B: Confucius’s Golden Mean

2A: Kant’s Categorical Imperative

2B: Islam’s Divine Commands

3: Mill’s Principle of Utility

4: Rawls’s Veil of Ignorance

5A: Judeo-Christian Persons as Ends

Identify one of the models you summarized and explain why you think it is better than the other two. You may want to define what you mean by better; for example, a better model might be one of the following:

One that is easiest for a majority of people to follow

One that you think most often leads to morally sound decisions

One that is most capable of handling tough moral dilemmas

One that allows you, personally, to make effective moral decisions

Describe a communications-related ethical problem and explain how you would apply your preferred model to address it. To strengthen your argument, you may wish to treat this portion of your paper as additional evidence for why your preferred model is better than the other two. If you can show how your preferred model leads to a better ethical decision for this particular problem, you will have made a stronger case for why it is better.
