Assessing Kentucky vs. North Carolina | University of Kentucky Basketball | Scoop.it

What a game. It was the most highly-anticipated regular season game of the college basketball season with good reason.  The likelihood that both of Kentucky and North Carolina will be playing deep into next March/April is better than not.  It was quite a classic in Rupp on Saturday.

Good breakdown of the St. Johns match-up in Rupp Arena tonight.  The Wildcats should be able to handle the Red Storm, who lost the majority of their talent from last year.  However, God'sgift Achiuwa could give Kentucky some problems inside, and could keep this game close if the Wildcats are looking forward to their date with North Carolina in just two days.

Worried About Teague’s Turnovers? He’s Right On Par

Worried About Teague’s Turnovers? He’s Right On Par | University of Kentucky Basketball | Scoop.it

Much of the talk around Big Blue Nation has been the play of Marquis Teague in the opening four games of the season.  Although the freshman point guard has shot the ball bettter than expected, he has commited an average of 4.5 turnovers per game, which has the Kentucky faithful worried.  This article by Drew Franklin of KSR shows the statistical comparison of the first four games from Teague with Brandon Knight and John Wall.  Strangely enough, all three of John Calipari's super talented freshman point guards have committed exactly 18 turnovers in their first four games.  So relax Big Blue Nation, if the past is any indication, Teague will be just fine.

Keys To Wildcat Victory: vs. Kansas

Keys To Wildcat Victory: vs. Kansas | University of Kentucky Basketball | Scoop.it

Kentucky faces their first real test of the young basketball season tonight as they take on the Kansas Jayhawks in the inagural Champions Classic.  While the exhibitions and opening game of the season were a treat for Wildcat fans, the real basketball starts now as the Wildcats will face the first of their scheduled eight battles against teams currently in the Top 25.  If Kentucky is to start the season off on a winning note, here's what I believe the keys will be:

1. How will the young Cats handle the big stage?

Let's not kid ourselves, this is not Adolph Rupp taking a team of Kentucky kids up to New York City for the first time in their lives.  This team is made up of guys from across the nation who have a great deal of experience playing in big arenas and on national TV.  However, this is this team's debut on the national stage and they must show the ability to handle it.  This is where I believe the experience of senior Darius Miller coming off the bench and returning stars like Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb will be invaluable.  I don't think anyone on this team will be overwhelmed by the spotlight, my main concern is that they stay within themselves and the system and don't try to do too much.  Hopefully one of the guys on the team can use this platform to catapult themselves to national prominence just as John Wall did two years ago in Madison Square Garden with a great performance against Connecticut.

2.  Can Kentucky dictate the pace of the game?

With their superior athleticism, depth, and offensive abilities, the Wildcats will want to push the pace of this contest and make Kansas attempt to run with them.  Bill Self will have his Jayhawks ready to try and slow the game down and force this young Kentucky team to execute in the half-court, which they haven't shown a great ability to do as of yet.  The key to this for me is the play of Marquis Teague.  John Calipari was unhappy with his freshman point guard after the Marist game last week, and Kentucky needs a good performance from Teague tonight to defeat the 11th-ranked Jayhawks.  It will be Teague's job to push the pace and attempt to get the Jayhawks out of their comfort zone, but he will also have to set the half-court offense when the Jayhawks are successful in slowing the Cats down.  It is very important that Kentucky speeds the pace of the game up while not rushing in their half-court sets.

3.  How good can Anthony Davis be?

When looking at the lineups of the two teams, the biggest mismatch appears to be Davis vs. Jeff Withey.  The super talented Kentucky freshman will be expected to win his position battle and I think what happens at that position tonight will give great insight to this Kentucky team going forward.  With the lack of the back-to-the-basket game possessed by big men such as Demarcus Cousins, I want to see how Calipari devises his offense to get looks for Davis against a big man that he enjoys such an advantage over.  Also, with the very talented Thomas Robinson battling Terrence Jones on the other side, Davis will have to dominate Withey on the boards.  Kentucky's center has looked suspect on the glass up to this point and will need a big performance tonight to limit second oppurtunities for Kansas and to get Kentucky out on the fast break after missed baskets.

All in all, I think Kentucky is the better team and will defeat the Jayhawks by about 12 points after wearing them down.  I am excited just to see how this edition of the Wildcats will respond to the big game atmosphere and how players like Teague, Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Kyle Wiltjer match-up with players closer to their skill level.  Whatever the outcome, I think this game will serve as a wonderful measuring stick and step in the fabulous journey that will be the 2011-2012 Kentucky Wildcats season.

The best national college basketball blog gives a very in-depth look at the post concepts John Calipari is using with his talented team this season.  The versatility of the Cats gives each look multiple options and is very dangerous.  Without a traditional back-to-the-basket post man, Calipari has to be creative with his offense to create low post oppurtunities.
