Matthew Connealy's curator insight, March 22, 2015 4:22 PM

Latitude and longitude are used to find precise locations, such as the Golden Gate Bridge. Parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude are the invisible grid of the Earth. The equator has a lat. of 0, and at 23.5N and 23.5S lie the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, with the tropics lying in between this region. Unlike latitude, longitude lines are not equidistant from each other. The Prime Meridian is at 0 and crosses Greenwich, England. These lines are measured by degrees, minutes and seconds.

Understanding this concept is key when studying geography. Having this base knowledge of lat. and long. are crucial to using maps and pinpointing locations all across the globe. This falls in right with our 1st unit of study in the field of basic geographic skills.
