Trump's Dubious Drought Claims

Trump's Dubious Drought Claims | Understanding Water | Scoop.it
The candidate said California has “no drought” and that water farmers need is being used to protect a “three-inch fish”
Jody MacPherson's insight:
Scientific American fact checks Donald Trump's claims that California is not experiencing a drought.

And well, you can guess how accurate he is...read the facts.

“The drought revealed our weaknesses in how we manage water for all sectors,” Mount told us in an email. “It gave us an unwelcome … glimpse into the future as conditions warm in California and competition for water becomes more intense.”

Jody MacPherson's insight:
"Gene Zimmerman, the forest supervisor who was in charge at the time, retired in 2005 and has since done paid consulting work for Nestle. In explaining the nearly three decades of inaction on the permit, Forest Service officials have cited a heavy workload of other priorities, wildfires and floods, a tight budget and limited staffing."

Oil spill in North Sask. River affecting water supply of 69,000 people

Oil spill in North Sask. River affecting water supply of 69,000 people | Understanding Water | Scoop.it
The water supply of about 69,000 people has been affected by an oil spill in the North Saskatchewan River, the province’s Water Security Agency says.
Jody MacPherson's insight:
Husky representatives are not clarifying how long the pipeline was leaking, but say the spill occurred overnight with the line being shut off at about 10:30 Thursday morning.

Prince Albert has since begun constructing a 20-centimetre-diameter irrigation pipe to draw water from the South Saskatchewan River near the Muskoday First Nation, about 20 to 30 kilometres away, and North Battleford is eyeing plans to install a pipe from Battle River as an alternate source of water.

Precautionary drinking water measures could be in place for weeks or even months in communities affected by the spill, Ferris said.

Survey suggests Calgarians rate oil and gas more important than water

Survey suggests Calgarians rate oil and gas more important than water | Understanding Water | Scoop.it
A new survey shows Calgarians value the country's fresh water supply far less than the rest of the country, with a clear majority suggesting oil and gas is Canada's most important natural resource.
Jody MacPherson's insight:
“All of our freshwater comes from a very narrow strip of land called the Eastern Slopes, this very thin margin of mountainous landscape that sits on our western border as a province,” he said. “This is a place we absolutely have to take seriously the fragile state of our water.”

Calgary, we have a problem.
