Anglo-Saxon Webquest Assignment

In a group of six, you will examine an aspect of Anglo-Saxon life more closely. You will spend some time exploring the Internet in the Media Center. Your group will then present this information to the class. Presentations must include a power point and should be 5 minutes long.

Language

- Where does Old English come from? Explore the roots of the language and how it developed. Be sure to discuss the differences in Old English and Modern English. Why are two languages with the same name so incredibly dissimilar? Conversely, what linguistic legacy have they left us?

- Be sure to find sound clips of Old English to play during your presentation.

Culture

- Describe a typical day for an Anglo-Saxon. Discuss what they would have worn, what their home would look like and what they did all day. How did they fulfill basic human needs of food, clothing, and shelter?

- Your presentation should include pictures, drawings, and/or models to illustrate your point.

Weaponry

- War was important to these people, so find out how and why they fought. What did their weapons look like? How were they made? Were they readily available?

- Provide physical or photographic examples of Anglo-Saxon weapons and methods of war.

Recreation

- What did the Anglo-Saxons do for fun? How did they entertain themselves and each other? Were they even a social people? Describe Anglo-Saxon fun.

- For your multi-media component, be sure to display some Anglo-Saxon art or play some music, or even show us an Anglo-Saxon party.

Lasting Achievements

- How do Anglo-Saxon values and culture affect our lives today? Look for art, music, architecture, laws, and morals that survive to the present day.

- For your multi-media component, display art or architecture, or even show us some Anglo-Saxon values in action.

Grading Guidelines

Presentations will be graded on quality of information given, relevance of information, style, and time. One grade will be given to the entire group. Points may be deducted for groups who do not have a grasp on their presentations, who go under/over the time limit, or who are disrespectful of other groups’ presentations.
